A leak appearing after descaling can happen if loosened limescale or debris moves through the water circuit and interferes with a valve or seal. It can also reveal an existing weak seal that had previously been partially covered by scale. Check where the water is appearing and whether the leak occurs while the machine is idle, rinsing or brewing.

Small particles of loosened material can sometimes move through the hydraulic circuit and temporarily prevent a valve from closing or sealing correctly. Running the required fresh-water rinse cycles may help clear remaining residue from the system.

Some additional water in the drip tray can be normal during the descaling and rinsing process. However, if the tray continues filling significantly faster after the programme has finished, monitor how much water reaches the cup compared with the tray. Persistent excessive drainage can indicate a valve, seal or brewing-system issue.

First check the water tank and drip tray, as both are frequently removed and refitted during descaling. Make sure the tank is seated correctly and the drip tray isn't overflowing. If these are secure but water appears underneath whenever the pump operates, an internal hose, connection, valve or seal may be leaking.

Correct descaling using a suitable product and the proper programme should not normally cause healthy seals to suddenly fail. However, seals naturally deteriorate with age and use, and removing accumulated scale can sometimes expose an existing weakness. A persistent leak immediately following descaling therefore deserves further investigation rather than repeated descaling.

Complete the required fresh-water rinse procedure first and make sure the water tank, drip tray and removable components are correctly fitted. Dry the machine thoroughly and identify when the leak returns. If water continues escaping internally, particularly during pumping or heating, stop using the machine until the source has been identified.
