The Dolce Gusto Piccolo XS is one of the smallest and most compact coffee machines in the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto range. Unlike automatic models, the Piccolo XS uses a manual lever, allowing you to control the amount of water dispensed for each drink. Operating at up to 15 bars of pressure, it produces espresso, americano and speciality coffees using Dolce Gusto capsules while taking up very little kitchen space.

Although simple to use, regular cleaning and descaling are essential to prevent blockages, maintain water flow and ensure consistent coffee quality.

The most common issues experienced by Piccolo XS owners include:

The Piccolo XS uses a simple indicator light to show its operating status.

If the indicator continues flashing for an unusually long time or the machine fails to reach the ready state, switch the machine off, disconnect it from the mains for a few minutes and restart it. Persistent problems may indicate a heating or internal electrical fault.

If the machine switches on but no water flows through the capsule holder, first check that the water tank is full and correctly fitted.

Limescale inside the water circuit is one of the most common causes of restricted flow. A blocked capsule piercing needle or trapped air inside the pump can also prevent water from being delivered.

If the pump can be heard running but no water is dispensed, descaling the machine and running several rinse cycles may restore normal operation.

Leaks are usually caused by damaged capsules, coffee residue around the capsule holder or worn seals.

Remove and clean the capsule holder thoroughly before checking that the water tank is correctly seated. Inspect the machine for cracks or damaged seals around the brewing area.

If water continues to leak despite cleaning and using new capsules, replacement parts or repair may be required.

Slow coffee flow is normally caused by limescale or a partially blocked water circuit.

Cleaning the capsule piercing area and carrying out a complete descaling cycle will often restore normal flow. Using filtered water where possible can also help reduce future limescale build-up.

If your drinks are cooler than expected, ensure the machine has fully completed its warm-up cycle before brewing.

Over time, limescale inside the heating system can reduce brewing temperature. Regular descaling helps maintain efficient heating and consistent coffee quality.

If the problem remains after descaling, the heating system may require further attention.

Routine maintenance keeps the Piccolo XS reliable and helps prevent many common faults.

Rinse and empty the drip tray regularly, clean the water tank with fresh water and wipe the capsule holder after each drink. Periodically clean the capsule piercing needle using the cleaning tool supplied with the machine to remove coffee residue.

Descale the Piccolo XS every three to four months, or more frequently if you live in a hard water area. Regular descaling protects the internal components, maintains water flow and helps ensure every cup tastes its best.
