How to Descale a Sage Barista Impress
guide
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
A suitable coffee machine descaler, 1 litre of fresh water for the descaling solution, 2 litres of fresh water for rinsing, and a large container to collect discharged water. Remove the water filter before starting.
CHECK THE DESCALE INDICATOR
The Sage Barista Express Impress uses the CLEAN / DESCALE indicator to identify maintenance requirements. A continuously illuminated indicator means the machine requires descaling. A flashing indicator means the coffee cleaning cycle is required instead.
PREPARE THE MACHINE
Switch the machine off using the POWER button and allow it to cool. Remove and empty the drip tray, then reinstall it correctly. Remove the water tank and take out the water filter.
Make sure the portafilter is removed from the group head before starting the descaling procedure.
PREPARE THE DESCALING SOLUTION
Dissolve one sachet of suitable descaling powder in 1 litre of fresh water, following the descaler's mixing instructions. Pour the prepared solution into the water tank and refit the tank securely.
Use only a descaling product suitable for espresso coffee machines. Do not use vinegar or household cleaning chemicals.
ENTER DESCALING MODE
With the machine switched OFF, press and hold the 2 CUP and POWER buttons together for approximately 5 seconds.
The machine will enter its dedicated descaling mode. Position a large container beneath the group head and hot-water outlet, ensuring discharged water can be collected safely.
DESCALE THE COFFEE CIRCUIT
Press the 2 CUP button to begin descaling the coffee circuit. The machine will pump descaling solution through the group head for approximately 25 seconds.
Allow the programmed operation to finish before moving to the next circuit.
DESCALE THE STEAM CIRCUIT
Position the steam wand over the drip tray or a suitable heat-resistant container. Turn the STEAM / HOT WATER dial to the right, into the STEAM position.
The steam circuit will operate for approximately 13 seconds. Return the dial to the central standby position when the operation has finished.
DESCALE THE HOT-WATER CIRCUIT
Place the collection container beneath the hot-water outlet. Turn the STEAM / HOT WATER dial to the left, into the HOT WATER position.
The machine will dispense descaling solution for approximately 8 seconds. Return the dial to the central standby position when finished.
REPEAT THE DESCALING SEQUENCE
Repeat the coffee, steam and hot-water circuit procedures to continue distributing the descaling solution throughout the machine.
Monitor the water tank throughout the process and do not allow the machine to operate with an empty tank.
RINSE THE WATER TANK
Remove the water tank and discard any remaining descaling solution. Rinse the tank thoroughly with fresh water to remove all traces of descaler.
Fill the tank with 2 litres of fresh drinking water and reinstall it securely. Empty the drip tray and collection container before continuing.
RINSE ALL THREE CIRCUITS
With fresh water in the tank, repeat the same three operations: press 2 CUP to flush the coffee circuit, turn the dial right to rinse the steam circuit, and turn the dial left to rinse the hot-water circuit.
Repeat the sequence as required to complete the rinsing stage and remove residual descaling solution from the internal water pathways.
EXIT DESCALING MODE
Once the descaling and rinsing procedures are complete, return the STEAM / HOT WATER dial to its central standby position and press POWER to exit descaling mode.
Empty and rinse the drip tray, then refit it securely. Reinstall the water filter or fit a new replacement filter if required.
CHECK YOUR MACHINE
Refill the tank with fresh drinking water and switch the machine on. Check that the descaling indicator has cleared and that water flows normally through the group head and hot-water outlet.
Your Sage Barista Express Impress is now ready for use. Regular descaling helps maintain consistent heating, water flow and espresso performance.
