Lavazza coffee machine not piercing capsules

Start by checking the capsule itself.

Lavazza specifies A Modo Mio or compatible capsules for A Modo Mio machines and warns against putting other objects into the capsule holder.

There is an additional compatibility issue with some older machines: Lavazza states that some current capsules aren't compatible with Espria, Espria+, Magia, Magia+, Fantasia and Fantasia+.

If the problem started immediately after changing capsule type or opening a different pack, try another capsule known to be suitable for your exact machine before investigating the piercing mechanism.

Lift the capsule loading lever fully and allow the capsule compartment to open normally.

Place one capsule only into the compartment and check that it settles into its normal position before lowering the lever.

The Idola and SMEG A Modo Mio instructions specifically state that capsules are single-dose and shouldn't be reused. They also warn that inserting two or more capsules can cause the machine to malfunction.

If a previous capsule hasn't dropped away correctly, don't load another one on top of it.

If the loading lever suddenly requires excessive force, stop.

Remove the capsule if it can be removed normally and inspect the capsule compartment for a capsule that hasn't seated or ejected correctly.

Try the lever again without a capsule.

If it operates normally when empty but becomes unusually difficult with a capsule fitted, concentrate on capsule positioning and compatibility.

If the lever remains stiff or won't travel normally even with the compartment empty, the problem is more likely within the capsule-loading mechanism.

Don't use additional force to make it close.

Several Lavazza A Modo Mio machines use a spent-capsule collection system.

For example, the Idola uses manual capsule ejection, while the Jolie has a removable used-capsule container with capacity for approximately five capsules.

Remove and empty the spent-capsule container.

Then operate the loading lever normally and check whether an old capsule is still sitting within the loading/brewing area.

A trapped capsule can prevent the next capsule from sitting in the correct position and can make the problem appear to be a failure of the piercing mechanism.

A capsule that appears unpierced doesn't automatically mean the piercing mechanism is the original fault.

Try to establish whether the machine can dispense water without a capsule where the procedure for your model allows it.

Lavazza's setup procedure specifically includes passing water through the appliance without a capsule fitted.

If the machine also produces no water without a capsule, investigate the water supply and pump circuit rather than concentrating solely on capsule piercing.

If water flows normally without a capsule but brewing repeatedly fails with correctly fitted compatible capsules, the capsule-loading/brewing mechanism becomes much more relevant.

Remove the failed capsule and inspect it once it has cooled.

Then try another compatible capsule from the pack.

Don't reuse the first capsule — Lavazza specifically states that the capsules are single-use.

If one capsule fails but subsequent capsules work normally, the problem may have been an individual capsule or loading issue.

If several compatible capsules repeatedly emerge without being correctly pierced, despite being correctly loaded and the lever operating normally, the machine's capsule mechanism requires further investigation.
