Switch the coffee machine off, wait briefly and restart it. Allow the machine to complete its normal start-up sequence. If F73 returns, the brew unit is still unable to reach its required start position and further checks are needed.

If your Miele model has a removable brew unit, remove it according to the machine instructions and clean it thoroughly. Coffee grounds and residue around the brewing mechanism can interfere with its movement. Allow the brew unit to drain before refitting it.

With the brew unit removed, inspect the accessible compartment for loose grounds and compacted coffee. Pay particular attention to areas where accumulated grounds could obstruct the brew unit as it moves. Do not reach into or interfere with inaccessible internal mechanisms.

Before refitting, check that the brew unit is in the correct position and hasn't become displaced. Reinstall it carefully and make sure it is fully seated. Never force the brew unit into the machine if it doesn't fit normally.

For affected Miele countertop machines, Miele's F73 guidance includes a procedure for returning the brew unit drive to its basic position. This involves removing the brew unit, closing the machine with the brew unit still removed, switching the machine on and allowing the drive to initialise before switching it off and reinstalling the brew unit. Follow the procedure for your exact model, as controls and steps can differ.

If the brew unit is clean, correctly installed and the reset procedure doesn't clear F73, don't repeatedly force or cycle the mechanism. The machine may have a problem with the brew-unit drive, positioning or another part of the brewing mechanism that requires further diagnosis.
