Use fresh, cold water when filling your Russell Hobbs coffee machine and avoid operating it with an empty or very low water tank. The Café Genie 28760 manual specifically warns against running the machine below the minimum water level, as running dry can mean the machine needs to be primed again before normal water flow returns.

Coffee residue can gradually restrict the small openings in the portafilter and filter baskets. Remove the portafilter after use, empty the grounds and wash the portafilter and sieve under running water before drying thoroughly. The manuals also advise using the supplied cleaning tool to clear blocked portafilter openings.

Milk systems need regular attention to prevent dried milk restricting the nozzle. On the Café Genie 28760, a short clean cycle is recommended after each milk-based drink. With the milk control dial placed in the cleaning position, the cycle sends steam and hot water through the milk nozzle for approximately 20 seconds.

The Café Genie 28760 keeps track of cleaning usage. After 200 uses, the clean icon flashes three times and then remains illuminated, indicating that a full clean cycle is required. The full cycle is carried out with descaler in the water tank, followed by another cycle using plain water to rinse the system.

Its manual advises regular descaling according to water hardness and frequency of use and specifically warns against mineral-acid-based products and vinegar.

Regularly empty and clean the drip tray and wipe the area where the portafilter locks into the machine. The 26451 has a drip-tray-full indicator to show when the tray needs emptying, while both manuals emphasise keeping removable brewing components clean. Coffee debris around the portafilter fitting can also prevent the portafilter from fitting correctly, so keeping this area clear helps maintain a secure seal.
