Coffee Machine Cleaning Guide
keep your coffee tasting great
Keep your coffee tasting great and your machine running reliably by cleaning it little-and-often. This guide covers daily, weekly, monthly, and deep-clean routines for the most common bean-to-cup, pod, and espresso machines, plus milk system hygiene, descaling, and the mistakes that cause breakdowns.Find Your Machine Type
Bean-to-cup (fully automatic)
- Built-in grinder + brew unit / infuser
- Often has automatic rinse + cleaning programs
- Usually needs: brew-unit cleaning, milk cleaning, descale (or water filter)
Espresso (manual/semi-auto)
- Portafilter + group head + steam wand
- Needs: backflushing (if 3-way valve), group-head cleaning, steam wand cleaning, descale
Pod machines (Nespresso / Dolce Gusto / Tassimo)
- Lower maintenance, but still needs: descale, drip tray clean, needle/adapter clean, water tank hygiene
- Built-in grinder + brew unit / infuser
Daily (2–5 minutes)
- Run the machine’s rinse cycle (if available)
- Empty and rinse:
Drip tray
Dreg/grounds box - Rinse and refill water tank (don’t “top up forever”)
- Wipe:
Coffee spouts
Machine front + drip area - If you use milk:
Run the milk rinse/clean immediately after every milk drink
Wipe milk outlet and any milk tube ends
- Run the machine’s rinse cycle (if available)
weekly (5–10 minutes)
Bean-to-cup:
Run cleaning tablet program (if the machine supports it)
Remove and rinse brew unit (if removable) and wipe brew chamber areaEspresso:
Clean group head + shower screen area
Clean portafilter basket and spouts
All machines:
Wash water tank with warm soapy water, rinse well
Clean hopper lid area and wipe oils/dustMonthly (20–40 minutes)
- Inspect and clean:
Grinder chute area (dry brush only)
Coffee outlets (remove and rinse if detachable)
Seals and O-rings (look for cracks, flattening) - Deep-clean milk system (even if you do daily rinses)
Every 2–3 months (or when prompted)
- Descale, unless you use a water filter and your machine is set up correctly for it
- Inspect and clean:
Bean-to-Cup Cleaning (Fully Automatic)
Brew Unit / Infuser (if removable)
- Remove brew unit (follow machine prompt or manual)
- Rinse under warm water (no detergent unless manual allows)
- Let it air dry
- Wipe inside the brew chamber:
Loose grounds
Dried coffee residue around the seals - Refit and run a rinse cycle
Don’t do this: - Don’t put brew units in dishwashers unless explicitly stated by the manufacturer
- Don’t grease randomly—only use food-safe grease if the manual recommends it
Cleaning Tablet Program
- Use the machine’s “Clean” / “Tablet” cycle
- Tablet goes into:
Bypass doser chute or
Brew unit chamber (depends on model) - Let the full cycle complete (don’t stop halfway)
What this removes:
- Coffee oils and internal residue that cause bitter taste, slow extraction, and brew faults.
- Remove brew unit (follow machine prompt or manual)
Milk System Cleaning (Most Important for Hygiene)
Milk systems fail when residue dries inside the lines.
After every milk drink
- Run the machine’s milk rinse (or flush steam wand)
- Wipe milk spout/wand immediately
Daily (if milk used)
- Use milk cleaner (liquid or tablet) as per instructions
Clean:
Milk tube
Milk frother head
Outlet spout parts (often detachable)
Weekly deep clean- Disassemble milk parts (frother, connectors, nozzles)
- Soak in milk cleaner solution
- Rinse thoroughly and reassemble
Signs your milk system needs cleaning now:
- Weak foam
- Sputtering milk
- Sour smell
- “Milk not dispensing” / “Milk system blocked” errors
- Run the machine’s milk rinse (or flush steam wand)
Espresso Machine Cleaning (Manual/Semi-Auto)
Group Head (daily)
- Flush hot water through group head
- Wipe the gasket area with a group brush
- Rinse portafilter and baskets
Backflush (if your machine supports it)
- Use a blind basket
- Run short on/off pulses
- Use espresso machine detergent periodically (weekly for frequent use)
Steam wand (after every use)
- Purge steam for 1–2 seconds
- Wipe wand with a damp cloth
- If blocked: soak the tip in warm water, then clean holes carefully
- Flush hot water through group head
Descaling Guide (When and How)
Descaling removes limescale buildup caused by hard water (common in many UK areas).
When to descale
- Machine prompts you
- Slow flow / low pressure
- Temperature instability
- Noisy pump
- Increased warm-up time
How to descale safely
- Use a proper coffee machine descaler
- Follow the exact program steps on your machine
- Always rinse thoroughly afterwards (often 1–2 full tanks)
Important:
- If you use a water filter, ensure the machine is set to “filter installed” in settings—otherwise it may still prompt descale unnecessarily.
- Machine prompts you
What Cleaning Products Do You Actually Need?
For most homes, this covers everything:
- Cleaning tablets (brew system / coffee oils)
- Milk system cleaner (liquid/tablet)
- Descaler
- Microfibre cloths
- Soft brush (dry brush for grinder area)
- Group head brush (espresso machines)
- Cleaning tablets (brew system / coffee oils)
Common Cleaning Mistakes That Cause Breakdowns
Skipping milk cleaning (leads to blockages + hygiene risks)
Descaling too late (scale damages heating and flow systems)
Using vinegar (can damage seals, leaves taste/odour)
Cleaning the grinder with water (ruins burrs/motor)
Leaving water in tank for days (biofilm + smell)
Stopping cleaning cycles halfway (can lock programs / trigger faults)Quick Troubleshooting
Coffee tastes bitter
- Run cleaning tablet cycle
- Clean coffee spouts
- Check old beans/oily beans residue
Coffee is weak / watery
- Brew unit dirty
- Grinder set too coarse
- Scale restricting flow (descale)
Milk not foaming
- Milk system blocked
- Frother parts not cleaned/disassembled
- Milk too warm / wrong milk type
- Run cleaning tablet cycle
