  • Check the Water Tank Is Properly Seated

    If the machine cannot draw water correctly, the pump may buzz loudly without delivering any water.

    Engineer Tip: Remove the water tank, refill it, check the inlet valve isn't obstructed, and firmly refit it before trying again.

  • Prime the Water Circuit

    After descaling, changing the water filter or leaving the machine unused, air can become trapped inside the hydraulic system.

    This often causes the pump to buzz continuously while little or no water flows.

    Engineer Tip: Run several hot water cycles through the steam or hot water outlet to remove trapped air.

  • Descale the Machine

    Limescale narrows internal pipes and valves, forcing the pump to work much harder.

    A louder buzzing noise is one of the first signs of restricted water flow.

    Engineer Tip: Complete the full manufacturer descaling programme using the recommended descaler rather than household vinegar.

  • Clean the Brew Unit

    A dirty or dry brew unit creates extra resistance during brewing.

    Some machines will buzz or groan as the brew mechanism tries to complete its cycle.

    Engineer Tip: Remove and rinse removable brew units regularly, then lubricate seals where recommended by the manufacturer.

  • Check the Grinder

    If the buzzing occurs before brewing starts, the grinder may be blocked by oily beans, foreign objects or compacted coffee.

    Engineer Tip: Empty the bean hopper, inspect for debris and avoid flavoured or heavily oily coffee beans.

  • Don't Ignore New Noises

    Coffee machines naturally make pump, grinder and brew unit noises, but these should remain fairly consistent.

    A sudden increase in buzzing often develops into a more serious fault if ignored.

    Engineer Tip: If buzzing is accompanied by leaks, error messages or no water delivery, stop repeated brewing attempts until the cause has been identified.
