If your Magnifica has run with an empty water tank, air can enter the hydraulic circuit and the pump may become noisy without delivering water. Refill the tank, make sure it is fully seated, then open the steam/hot-water control and attempt to dispense hot water. Allow the machine time to draw water through the circuit. Once a steady flow is established, close the control and try brewing again.

If a water filter is fitted, temporarily remove it and test the machine without the filter. A saturated, incorrectly primed or blocked filter can restrict the supply to the pump. If normal water flow returns with the filter removed, replace and correctly prime the filter before refitting it. Don't continue repeatedly running the pump dry if it cannot draw water.

Remove the Magnifica's water tank and inspect the spring-loaded outlet valve underneath. Coffee residue, scale or debris around the valve can prevent water entering the machine even though the tank is full. Check that the valve moves freely and clean the tank and valve area thoroughly. When the tank is refitted, push it fully home so the machine's inlet correctly opens the tank valve.

If the machine will not make coffee, try dispensing hot water from the steam/hot-water outlet. This is a useful Magnifica diagnostic check. If hot water flows normally but no water reaches the coffee spouts, the pump itself is unlikely to be the first suspect—the restriction may instead be around the brewing unit, coffee circuit or coffee outlet. If neither coffee nor hot water is delivered, investigate the tank supply, filter, airlock, scale restriction and pump circuit first.

A heavily contaminated Magnifica infuser can restrict the brewing circuit and make a healthy pump appear weak. Switch the machine off with its normal power button and wait for the shutdown cycle to finish before removing the infuser. Rinse it thoroughly with water, paying particular attention to coffee residue around the moving sections and filter screens. Allow excess water to drain before refitting it securely.

A Magnifica pump that becomes noticeably louder than normal is often trying to operate without a sufficient water supply. Check the tank, tank connection, filter and possible airlock before condemning the pump. Conversely, a pump that can be heard operating normally but still produces little or no water after the supply-side checks may indicate a scale restriction or blockage further through the hydraulic circuit.
