On Dolce Gusto models that use the red and green status indicator, a flashing red light during start-up is normally part of the heating process. Allow the machine to finish warming up before trying to make a drink. Once ready, the indicator should change to its normal ready state.

If the red light continues flashing for much longer than usual and the machine never becomes ready, this is when it should be treated as a possible fault rather than normal operation.

The speed and timing of the light can be important. A normal start-up flash shouldn't be confused with a rapidly flashing red warning.

On applicable models, rapid red flashing can indicate that the machine's protection system has activated. Switch the machine off, unplug it and allow it to cool before attempting to use it again. For example, the Infinissima instructions specify allowing approximately 20 minutes before restarting after this condition.

If rapid flashing returns after the machine has cooled, further investigation may be required.

On Dolce Gusto machines equipped with a descaling reminder, an orange or amber indication is normally telling you that maintenance is due rather than that the machine has broken down.

Complete the correct descaling procedure for your particular model. Don't ignore the reminder indefinitely: scale inside the water circuit can eventually cause slower dispensing, increased pump noise and reduced heating performance.

Switching the machine repeatedly on and off because the light is flashing can make diagnosis more confusing. When first switched on, give the machine time to complete its normal heating cycle.

If it reaches the ready state normally, there is unlikely to be a problem. If it repeatedly fails to become ready, disconnect it from the mains for several minutes before trying again.

If a descaling warning remains after you've put descaler through the machine, don't immediately repeat the process. Some models require the complete descaling and rinsing procedure to be followed correctly for the reminder to clear.

Make sure you've completed the entire procedure for your model, including the required fresh-water rinse. Simply passing some descaling solution through the machine isn't necessarily the same as completing its designated descaling process.

Dolce Gusto machines don't all use identical controls or indicator sequences. A Genio S, Mini Me, Piccolo XS and Infinissima can behave differently.

If you're seeing an unusual combination, repeated flashing or a colour that doesn't match normal start-up behaviour, identify the exact model from the rating label and check its model-specific instructions. This avoids diagnosing a normal operating light as a fault.
