Gaggia classic

The power indicator is positioned above the on/off button. When the Gaggia Classic is switched on, this light illuminates to confirm that the machine is receiving power.

If the power light does not illuminate at all, check the mains supply, plug and power connection first. If the electrical supply is confirmed but the machine remains completely dead, an internal electrical fault may require investigation.

The coffee temperature indicator shows when the Gaggia Classic has reached the temperature required for brewing.

After switching the machine on, allow it to warm up. When the coffee temperature light illuminates, the machine is ready for espresso preparation.

If the light does not come on after allowing sufficient warm-up time, the machine may not be reaching brewing temperature and the heating system may require further diagnosis.

The steam temperature indicator is used when preparing milk. Press the steam button and allow the boiler to increase in temperature.

The Classic manual specifies waiting approximately 15–20 seconds and for the steam temperature indicator to illuminate before beginning to steam milk.

If the steam light does not illuminate or the machine produces little or no steam after heating, check the steam wand for blockage and consider whether the machine requires descaling.

If you can hear the pump but no water comes from the brew group, the Classic manual identifies an air bubble in the water circuit as a possible cause.

Fill the water tank, place a container underneath the steam wand, open the steam/hot-water knob and activate the brew button. Once water begins flowing steadily from the steam wand, dispense approximately one cup of water, close the knob and switch the brew button off.

Coffee may dispense slowly if the coffee is ground too finely, too much coffee has been placed in the filter basket or the coffee has been tamped too firmly.

Also check that the filter basket and group head are clean and that normal water flow is available without the portafilter installed.

If espresso flows through the coffee too quickly, the grind may be too coarse or there may not be enough coffee in the filter basket.

Use an espresso-appropriate grind and make small adjustments until the extraction becomes more controlled.

Allow the machine and portafilter sufficient time to warm before brewing. Cold cups can also rapidly reduce the temperature of a small espresso, so preheating the cups can improve the final drink temperature.

If the coffee temperature indicator never illuminates, the machine may not be heating correctly.

If water or coffee escapes around the edge of the portafilter during brewing, check that the portafilter has been correctly locked into the group head.

Clean coffee grounds from around the edge of the filter basket and group-head seal. Persistent leaking may indicate that the group gasket has become worn and requires replacement.

Make sure the steam button has been selected and wait for the steam temperature light before opening the steam valve.

If the machine reaches steam temperature but steam remains weak, clean the steam nozzle and check for dried milk residue. Limescale within the boiler or steam circuit can also reduce steam performance.

Gaggia Classic Pump Is Very Noisy

A noticeably loud pump combined with little or no water flow can indicate that the pump is struggling to draw water. Check that the tank contains sufficient water and prime the circuit through the steam wand.

If water flow cannot be restored after priming and descaling, the pump or another component within the water circuit may require further diagnosis.
