HOW TO CLEAN A SAGE BARISTA EXPRESS STEAM WAND

Milk residue can quickly build up around the steam wand and inside the steam tip of your Sage Barista Express. Cleaning and purging the wand immediately after texturing milk helps keep the steam holes clear and maintains consistent steam performance.

01

WIPE THE STEAM WAND

Clean the steam wand after every time you texture milk. Once you have finished steaming, wipe the outside of the wand thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove fresh milk residue before it has a chance to dry onto the surface.

02

PURGE THE STEAM WAND

Point the steam wand down over the drip tray, then briefly turn the STEAM/HOT WATER dial to STEAM. This purges milk that may have been drawn into the end of the wand. Return the dial to STANDBY when finished.

03

CHECK THE STEAM TIP

If steam performance has reduced or one or more of the holes in the steam tip appear blocked, the tip will need additional cleaning. Return the STEAM/HOT WATER dial to STANDBY, switch the machine off and allow the steam wand to cool before working on the tip.

04

CLEAR BLOCKED STEAM HOLES

Use the pin on the cleaning tool supplied with the Barista Express to clear the holes in the steam tip. Insert the pin carefully into any blocked holes to loosen dried milk residue without damaging the tip.

05

REMOVE THE STEAM TIP IF NEEDED

If the steam tip remains blocked, use the integrated spanner in the supplied cleaning tool to unscrew and remove the tip from the steam wand. Only do this once the machine has been switched off and the steam wand has cooled.

06

SOAK AND CLEAR THE TIP

Soak the removed steam tip in hot water to help loosen stubborn milk residue. Use the cleaning-tool pin again to clear the holes before rinsing the tip thoroughly.

07

REFIT THE STEAM TIP

Once the holes are clear, refit the steam tip securely onto the steam wand using the cleaning tool. Make sure the tip is correctly fitted before using the steam function again.

08

TEST THE STEAM WAND

Turn the machine back on and allow it to reach operating temperature. Point the wand over the drip tray and briefly run the steam function. Check that steam is flowing freely through the tip before texturing milk again.

FAQ'S

FAQ'S

  • How often should I clean the Sage Barista Express steam wand?

Clean the steam wand every time you texture milk. Wipe the outside with a damp cloth immediately after use and briefly purge the wand over the drip tray. Doing this while the milk residue is still fresh helps prevent it drying onto or inside the steam tip.

  • What should I do if my Sage Barista Express steam wand is blocked?

Switch the machine off, allow the wand to cool and use the pin on the supplied cleaning tool to clear the steam-tip holes. If the blockage remains, Sage allows the steam tip to be unscrewed using the spanner in the cleaning tool, soaked in hot water and cleared again before being refitted.

  • Why is my Sage Barista Express steam wand getting weaker?

Check the steam-tip holes for dried milk residue, particularly if the wand has not been purged immediately after use. A partially blocked tip can restrict steam flow. Clean the holes using the supplied cleaning-tool pin and, for a stubborn blockage, remove and soak the tip as described in Sage's cleaning procedure.

Engineer Tip

Wipe and purge the steam wand as soon as you finish texturing milk rather than leaving it until later. Fresh milk residue is much easier to remove. If steam performance starts to drop, check the tip holes before assuming there is an internal machine fault — a partially blocked steam tip can noticeably restrict steam flow.
