how to run coffee cleaning cycle sage barista impress
guide
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
One suitable espresso machine cleaning tablet, the silicone cleaning disc supplied with your Sage Barista Express Impress, the 1 CUP filter basket, portafilter, fresh drinking water and a container to collect the rinse water.
CHECK THE CLEANING INDICATOR
The Sage Barista Express Impress uses the CLEAN / DESCALE indicator to show when maintenance is required.
A flashing CLEAN / DESCALE light indicates that a coffee cleaning cycle is required. A continuously illuminated light indicates that the machine requires descaling instead.
PREPARE THE WATER TANK
Check that the water tank contains sufficient fresh drinking water to complete the cleaning cycle.
Remove the drip tray, empty any collected water and coffee residue, then refit it securely before starting.
INSERT THE CLEANING DISC
Remove the portafilter from the group head and insert the 1 CUP filter basket.
Place the silicone cleaning disc into the filter basket. The disc restricts normal water flow during the cleaning cycle, allowing the machine to flush coffee oils and residue from the brewing system.
ADD THE CLEANING TABLET
Place one suitable espresso machine cleaning tablet onto the cleaning disc inside the filter basket.
Do not use descaling tablets or descaling liquid for this procedure. Coffee cleaning tablets are designed to remove coffee oils and residue rather than mineral deposits.
LOCK IN THE PORTAFILTER
Insert the prepared portafilter into the group head and rotate it firmly into the locked position.
Make sure the portafilter is secure. Position a suitable container beneath the group head to catch any water released during the procedure.
SWITCH THE MACHINE OFF
Press the POWER button to switch the machine off.
The cleaning cycle is activated using a dedicated button combination while the machine is switched off. Do not start a normal espresso extraction.
START THE COFFEE CLEANING CYCLE
Press and hold the 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER buttons simultaneously for approximately 3 seconds.
The machine will enter its automatic coffee cleaning cycle. Release the buttons once the cycle begins.
ALLOW THE CLEANING CYCLE TO FINISH
The automatic cleaning cycle takes approximately 5 minutes.
During this time, the machine repeatedly pumps water through the group head to dissolve the cleaning tablet and flush accumulated coffee oils from the brewing system.
Little or no water may emerge from the portafilter during the cleaning cycle. This is normal when the cleaning disc is correctly installed. Do not remove the portafilter while the cycle is running.
CHECK THE CLEANING TABLET
Once the cleaning cycle has finished, carefully remove the portafilter and inspect the cleaning disc.
If any cleaning tablet remains undissolved, refit the portafilter and repeat the cleaning cycle until the cleaning product has dissolved completely.
REMOVE THE CLEANING DISC
Remove the silicone cleaning disc from the filter basket and rinse the disc, filter basket and portafilter thoroughly with fresh water.
Make sure no cleaning product remains in the portafilter before carrying out the final rinse.
RUN A FRESH-WATER RINSE
Refit the portafilter without the cleaning disc or tablet. Position a container underneath and press the 2 CUP button to flush fresh water through the group head.
This helps remove any remaining cleaning solution from the coffee outlet and filter basket.
COMPLETE THE CLEANING PROCESS
Remove the portafilter and empty the drip tray. Rinse and dry the removable components before refitting them.
Check that the CLEAN / DESCALE indicator has stopped flashing and that the machine operates normally. Your Sage Barista Express Impress is now ready for use.
