Melitta coffee machine care guides
Keeping your Melitta coffee machine clean is one of the easiest ways to maintain reliable performance, improve coffee quality and reduce the risk of faults. Regular cleaning, descaling and replacing the water filter where fitted helps prevent blockages, protects internal components and ensures your machine continues producing great-tasting coffee for years to come.
Daily Care
After preparing your drinks, empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container before they become full. Rinse the water tank with fresh water and refill it daily to help reduce stale water and mineral deposits. If your Melitta machine has a milk system, clean it after every use to prevent milk residue from drying inside the pipes, which can lead to poor frothing, blockages and hygiene issues. Wipe the coffee spouts and exterior surfaces with a soft damp cloth to remove coffee splashes and fingerprints.
Weekly Cleaning
Remove and wash the drip tray, grounds container and any removable milk components using warm water and a mild detergent before allowing them to dry completely. Clean around the coffee outlet and bean hopper to remove loose coffee grounds and oils. If your Melitta model has a removable brewing unit, remove it according to the user instructions, rinse it under lukewarm water only and allow it to dry naturally before refitting. Avoid using washing-up liquid on the brewing unit unless specifically recommended for your model.
Descaling
Limescale gradually builds up inside every coffee machine, particularly in hard water areas. Descale your Melitta coffee machine whenever the machine prompts you, or every two to three months if you live in a hard water area. Always use a descaling product suitable for automatic coffee machines and follow the on-screen descaling programme where available. Never switch the machine off during a descale cycle unless instructed to do so.
Water Filter Care
Many Melitta coffee machines use a water filter to reduce limescale and improve coffee flavour. Replace the filter at the recommended interval or whenever your machine indicates it requires changing. Installing a fresh filter helps reduce scaling, improves water quality and can extend the life of internal components.
General Maintenance
Cleaning the Milk System
Milk systems should be cleaned immediately after preparing milk-based drinks. Flush the automatic cleaning programme if your machine includes one, then regularly remove and thoroughly wash the milk hose, milk container and frothing components. Dried milk residue is one of the most common causes of poor milk frothing and blocked milk circuits.
Coffee Bean and Grinder Care
Only use high-quality roasted coffee beans designed for bean-to-cup coffee machines. Avoid flavoured, caramelised or oily beans, as these can coat the grinder and brewing system, leading to blockages and inconsistent grinding. Keep the bean hopper free from old beans and wipe away excess coffee dust during routine cleaning.
General Maintenance Tips
Allow your Melitta coffee machine to complete any automatic rinse cycles when switching on and off. Always use fresh water, avoid leaving coffee grounds inside the machine for extended periods and empty waste containers regularly. Following the cleaning reminders and maintenance programmes built into your machine will help keep it operating efficiently while reducing the likelihood of unexpected faults.
