quick tips

  • Test the AquaClean filter

If the problem started after fitting or replacing the AquaClean filter, remove it temporarily and test the machine again. A filter that has not been correctly prepared can trap air and prevent the machine from drawing water properly. Before installation, shake the filter for around 5 seconds, immerse it upside down in cold water and shake/press it until the trapped air is released.

  • Check for a restricted AquaClean filter

A blocked or exhausted water filter can significantly reduce water flow. Remove the AquaClean filter and test the machine without it. If normal water flow returns, replace the filter rather than continuing to operate with a restricted one.

  • Reseat the water tank

Remove the water tank, fill it and push it firmly back into position. If the tank is not fully seated, air can enter the water circuit instead of the pump receiving a consistent supply of water. This is particularly worth checking if you can hear the pump operating but no water is coming through.

  • Clear trapped air from the water circuit

An airlock can occur after the water tank has run empty, been removed or a new filter has been installed. Refill the tank and use the hot-water function to help prime the water circuit. Allow the machine time to draw water through before repeatedly starting coffee cycles.

  • Check for limescale restricting the water circuit

Limescale can gradually reduce water flow until very little or no water reaches the outlet. If the Calc/Clean indication is showing, complete the full descaling programme. A machine with restricted water flow should not be repeatedly operated without first ruling out a scale blockage.

  • Check whether hot water still works

This is an important diagnostic check. If hot water dispenses normally but coffee does not, the main water supply and pump are likely still operating. Check the brew group, coffee dispensing outlet and pre-ground coffee compartment for contamination or blockages. If neither hot water nor coffee dispenses, concentrate on the tank, filter, airlock and internal water circuit first.

FAQ's

  • Why can I hear my Philips 5400 pump running but no water comes out?

The pump may be drawing air rather than water. Check that the water tank is full and completely seated, then remove the AquaClean filter and test again. If the machine has recently run out of water or had a filter replaced, trapped air in the water circuit is particularly likely.

  • Can the AquaClean filter stop my Philips 5400 pumping water?

Yes. A poorly prepared, incorrectly fitted or restricted AquaClean filter can interfere with water flow. Remove the filter and test the machine without it. If water starts flowing normally, replace or correctly prepare the filter before refitting it.

  • Does no water mean the pump has failed?

Not necessarily. First check whether the machine can dispense hot water. If hot water works but coffee doesn't, look for a blockage around the brew group or coffee path. If there is no water from any outlet, check the water tank, AquaClean filter, trapped air and limescale before suspecting an internal pump or hydraulic fault.
