Quick Tips

Quick Tips

  • CHECK THE WATER TANK

Remove the 2-litre water tank and refill with fresh, cold water. Check that the spring-loaded valve underneath moves freely and that the tank is pushed fully down into position. An incorrectly seated tank can prevent water reaching the pump.

  • TEST WITHOUT THE PORTAFILTER

Remove the portafilter and press the 2 CUP button. Water should flow directly from the group head. If water flows normally without the portafilter, the problem is more likely to involve the coffee grind, filter basket or a restriction in the brewing path.

  • CHECK THE HOT WATER OUTLET

Turn the STEAM/HOT WATER dial to HOT WATER and check whether water flows from the dedicated outlet. If hot water works but nothing comes through the group head, this helps narrow the fault to the coffee delivery circuit rather than a complete loss of water supply.

  • CHECK FOR A BLOCKED FILTER BASKET

A very fine grind, excessive coffee dose or blocked filter basket can prevent espresso from flowing. Clean the basket using the supplied cleaning tool and try a slightly coarser grind. Test the machine again without coffee to distinguish an extraction problem from a water supply fault.

  • CHECK FOR AIR IN THE WATER CIRCUIT

If the tank has run empty, air may interrupt water delivery. Refill and correctly seat the tank, then briefly operate the HOT WATER function to check whether flow returns. Avoid repeatedly running the pump without water, as prolonged dry operation may cause damage.

  • CHECK FOR SCALE OR AN INTERNAL FAULT

Mineral deposits can restrict water flow through the Barista Express thermocoil and internal waterways. If water flow is reduced, follow the manufacturer's descaling procedure. If neither the group head nor hot water outlet delivers water after basic checks, the pump, water supply or internal valves may require professional diagnosis.

  • Why is my Sage Barista Express making a pumping noise but no water comes out?

The pump may be operating without receiving sufficient water. Check that the tank is full and correctly seated, then test the hot water outlet. Air in the circuit, scale buildup or an internal restriction can also cause this symptom. Avoid prolonged operation without water.

  • Why does my Sage Barista Express have pressure but no coffee comes out?

If the pressure gauge rises but espresso does not flow, the coffee may be ground too finely, overdosed or tamped too firmly. Try a coarser grind, reduce the coffee dose and clean the filter basket. If water flows normally without the portafilter, the issue is likely related to extraction rather than the pump.

  • Can descaling fix a Sage Barista Express that is not pumping water?

Yes, if mineral deposits are restricting water flow. Follow the BES875 descaling procedure using a suitable descaler. However, if no water flows through either outlet, descaling may not circulate properly and further diagnosis could be required.
