  • Start with grind setting 16

    Sage recommends beginning at grind size No.16 and adjusting finer or coarser depending on extraction time and flavour.

  • Use fresh coffee beans.

    The Impress dosing system automatically adjusts over time, but fresh beans produce the most consistent results and better crema.

  • Purge the group head first

    Run a short burst of water before inserting the portafilter to stabilise the brewing temperature and remove old coffee residue.

  • Purge the grinder regularly

    Hold the Dose button before your first coffee of the day to remove stale grounds left inside the burrs and chute.

  • Clean the steam wand after every use

    Wipe the wand immediately and purge steam to prevent milk drying inside the tip and affecting performance.

  • Replace the water filter every three months

    A fresh filter improves coffee flavour and reduces scale build-up inside the machine.

FAQ's

  • Why is my espresso pouring too quickly?

    A fast pour usually means the grind is too coarse or there isn't enough coffee in the basket. Try making the grind slightly finer or use the Impress system to reach the ideal dose level before brewing.

  • Why does the Dose button flash "A Bit More"?

    The machine has detected an under-dose after tamping. Press the Dose button once and the grinder will automatically add a little more coffee before you tamp again.

  • Why isn't my milk frothing properly?

    Milk texture is usually affected by dried milk inside the steam tip, incorrect steaming technique or using warm milk. Always purge and wipe the steam wand immediately after use and begin with cold fresh milk.

  • Maintenance light flashing

    A cleaning cycle is required. Run the cleaning programme using a Sage cleaning tablet.

  • Maintenance light permanently on

    The machine requires descaling. Complete the full descale programme before continuing normal use.

  • Tamp light continues flashing

    The tamping stroke was not completed. Push the tamp lever fully down until you hear the confirmation beep.

  • Bean hopper warning

    If the filter lights flash between the single and double basket symbols, the bean hopper is not locked correctly. Remove and refit the hopper until it locks securely.

  • Low coffee bean warning

    The Dose button and dose level LEDs flash red with three beeps, indicating the bean hopper needs refilling.

  • Tamp lever warning

    Three beeps during grinding indicate the tamp lever has not been returned to the home position. Raise the lever fully before continuing.

  • How to Clean the Milk System

    Although the Barista Express Impress has a manual steam wand rather than an automatic milk system, regular cleaning is essential.

    1. Immediately after steaming milk, wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth.
    2. Purge the wand by briefly opening the steam valve to clear milk from inside the tip.
    3. If the steam tip becomes blocked, remove it and clean it using the supplied steam tip cleaning tool.
    4. Soak the steam tip in warm water if milk residue has hardened.
    5. Refit the tip securely before steaming again.
    6. Keep the steam wand clean after every use to maintain strong steam performance and hygienic milk preparation.

  • How to Set the Grinder

    The Barista Express Impress features 25 external grind settings, with an adjustable upper burr for a wider grinding range.

    • Start at grind setting 16.
    • Turn the grind dial towards the back of the machine for a finer grind.
    • Turn the dial towards the front for a coarser grind.
    • Make only one adjustment at a time.
    • If you need a wider adjustment range, unlock the hopper, remove the upper burr and move it one number finer or coarser before reassembling.

  • How to Change the Water Filter

    1. Remove the water tank.
    2. Remove the old filter and filter holder.
    3. Soak the new filter in cold water for 5 minutes.
    4. Rinse the filter holder under cold water.
    5. Fit the filter into the holder.
    6. Push the assembled holder firmly into the water tank until it locks into place.
    7. Refill the tank with fresh cold water and reinstall it.
    8. Replace the filter every three months to reduce limescale and maintain coffee quality.
