Keeping your Smeg coffee machine clean is the best way to maintain coffee quality, reliable performance and a long service life. The official Smeg manuals recommend regular cleaning of the brewing system, drip tray, grounds container and water tank, together with descaling when prompted by the machine.

Your Smeg machine monitors water hardness and will illuminate the descaling warning when limescale has reached the programmed limit.

• Descale as soon as the steady descaling light appears.
  
• If the descaling light begins flashing, the machine will block drink preparation until descaling has been completed.
  
• Always follow the complete descaling programme without interruption.

  Use a descaler recommended by Smeg to help prevent damage to the internal components.

The removable brewing unit should be cleaned at least once each week.

To clean it:

• Open the service door while the machine is switched on.
  
• Remove the brewing unit using the release clips.
  
• Rinse under clean running water only.
  
• Clean the brewing compartment using the supplied cleaning brush.

  Dry all components thoroughly before refitting.
  

The machine also illuminates the brewing group indicator when cleaning is recommended.

Empty the coffee grounds container every time the machine indicates it is full.

For the counter to reset correctly:

• Leave the machine switched on.
  
• Remove the grounds container.
  
• Empty and clean it.
  
• Leave it out for at least 15 seconds before refitting.
  

This allows the machine to recognise that the container has been emptied.

The external drip tray contains a red level indicator which rises as it fills.

Smeg recommends:

• Emptying the tray before it overflows.
  
• Washing the tray and cup support with warm water and mild washing-up liquid.
  
• Drying all parts before reinstalling.
  
• Cleaning the tray daily for best performance.

A clean water tank helps maintain drink quality and reliable operation.

Regularly:

• Remove the tank.
  
• Wash using clean water and a mild detergent.
  
• Rinse thoroughly.
  
• Remove any visible limescale deposits before refitting.
  

The manual notes that limescale inside the tank can affect correct machine operation.

If your Smeg model includes a steam wand, it should be cleaned after every use.

• Allow the steam wand to cool.
  
• Remove the lower section.
  
• Clean the steam outlet using the supplied cleaning needle.
  
• Rinse under running water.
  
• Reassemble before the next use.
  

Regular cleaning helps prevent milk residue and blocked steam outlets.

Smeg recommends carrying out a manual rinse of both the coffee and water circuits after certain maintenance tasks, particularly after cleaning the brewing unit.

The rinse cycle cleans:

• the coffee dispenser
  
• the coffee circuit
  
• the hot water and steam circuit
  

This helps keep the internal hydraulic system clean between normal use.

The machine allows you to programme the water hardness to match your local supply.

Using the supplied test strip:

• Soft water
  
• Medium water
  
• Hard water
  

Selecting the correct setting helps the machine calculate when descaling is required and can reduce unnecessary descaling reminders. Smeg also recommends fitting the optional water softener filter where appropriate.
