De’Longhi Coffee Machine Descaling Guide

Descaling is one of the most important maintenance tasks for keeping a De’Longhi coffee machine operating correctly. Over time, minerals naturally present in water form limescale deposits inside the heating system, pipes and internal components of the machine. This build-up can affect water flow, reduce heating efficiency and eventually lead to performance issues such as cooler coffee temperatures, slower dispensing or warning messages on the display. Regular descaling removes these deposits and helps restore normal machine performance.

  • 1. Prepare the Machine

Switch on the coffee machine and ensure the water tank is accessible. Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container if required. Place a large container (at least 1–2 litres) under the coffee spouts and steam wand to collect the descaling liquid during the process.

    2. Add Descaling Solution

Remove the water tank and fill it with the recommended amount of descaling solution. The solution should then be diluted with fresh water according to the instructions on the descaler bottle. Reinsert the water tank into the machine once the mixture is prepared.

    3. Start the Descaling Programme

Open the machine’s maintenance menu or press the descale function on the control panel. The machine will begin pumping the descaling solution through the internal water system and out of the coffee spouts. This stage removes limescale from the heating system and water circuit.

  • 4. Allow the Descaling Cycle to Complete

During the cycle, the machine may pause several times while the descaling solution works inside the system. The process typically takes around 20–30 minutes, depending on the model. The liquid will gradually be dispensed into the container placed under the spouts.

    5. Rinse the Machine

Once the descaling solution has finished circulating, the machine will prompt you to rinse the water tank. Empty the tank, rinse it thoroughly with clean water and refill it with fresh water. The machine will then run a rinse cycle to remove any remaining descaling solution from the internal pipes.

    6. Return the Machine to Normal Use

After the rinse cycle has completed, the descaling programme will finish and the machine will return to normal operation. The descale indicator should disappear, and the machine will be ready to prepare coffee again.

  • How Often Should You Descale a De’Longhi Machine?

How frequently a coffee machine needs descaling depends largely on the hardness of the water used and how often the machine is operated. In areas with hard water, descaling may be required every one to two months, while softer water may allow longer intervals between cycles. Using a water filter inside the machine’s water tank can help reduce limescale formation and extend the time between descaling programmes.

  • Recommended Descaling Products

Using a descaling solution specifically designed for coffee machines helps remove limescale safely without damaging seals or internal components. Descalers formulated for De’Longhi machines are designed to work with the internal thermoblock heating system and automatic cleaning programmes.
