quick tips

  • Set the water hardness when you first set up the machine

The Rivelia Start uses the water-hardness setting as part of its maintenance setup. Dip the supplied test strip in your tap water for 1 second, shake off the excess and wait approximately 1 minute. Compare the result with the four hardness levels and set the corresponding level using the control panel.

Getting this right from the beginning helps the machine manage its maintenance requirements correctly.

  • Use Bean Switch properly when changing coffee beans

The Rivelia Start's Bean Switch system is designed to let you change between different beans without simply mixing the old and new coffee together.

When changing beans, use the dedicated Bean Switch control and follow the indicated emptying sequence before removing or changing the bean container. Don't simply lift the container while it still contains beans and expect the grinder path to be empty.

This is particularly useful if you regularly switch between normal and decaffeinated beans.

  • Only use one level scoop of pre-ground coffee

For drinks that support pre-ground coffee, select the pre-ground option before adding coffee to the funnel. Add no more than one level scoop.

Do not pack coffee into the funnel or add multiple scoops. Too much pre-ground coffee can prevent the machine from completing the drink correctly.

  • Use the correct intensity before changing the grinder

The control panel allows the coffee intensity to be changed before preparation. If your coffee is simply stronger or weaker than you would like, adjust the intensity first rather than immediately changing the grinder.

Grinder adjustment should be reserved for problems with the actual extraction, such as coffee running unusually quickly or slowly.

  • Clean the LatteCrema system after milk drinks

After preparing a milk drink, the Rivelia Start indicates that the milk system requires its CLEAN cycle. Leave the milk carafe connected and follow the cleaning indication so the machine can flush the milk outlet.

This quick clean is important, but it does not replace dismantling and thoroughly washing the milk carafe.

  • Don't confuse descaling with machine cleaning

The Rivelia Start has two different maintenance procedures.

Descaling removes limescale from the hydraulic circuit and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Machine cleaning is a separate programme using a cleaning tablet, takes approximately 10 minutes, and is followed by removal and rinsing of the brewing unit.

If the machine indicates one of these procedures, carry out the procedure actually requested rather than treating them as the same maintenance operation.

FAQ's

  • Why is my De'Longhi Rivelia Start coffee weak or watery?

Start by checking the selected coffee intensity. The Rivelia Start provides several intensity settings, so a low setting can produce a noticeably lighter drink.

Also check the bean hopper and make sure beans are feeding correctly into the grinder. If you have recently used the Bean Switch system, make sure the new bean container has been correctly fitted and locked into position.

If using pre-ground coffee, use one level scoop only and select the appropriate pre-ground setting before starting the drink.

If the coffee is still extracting incorrectly, the grinder may need attention, but avoid making several grinder changes at once. Small adjustments should be assessed over several coffees.

  • Why is milk not frothing properly on my De'Longhi Rivelia Start?

Remove the LatteCrema carafe and check the milk container, intake tube, milk outlet and lid assembly for dried milk deposits.

The quick CLEAN operation after a milk drink flushes the system, but periodically the carafe needs to be completely dismantled. The guide shows the milk-system components being removed individually before cleaning.

For a thorough clean, the components can be rinsed and soaked in water at approximately 40–50°C for more than 30 minutes. The guide also indicates dishwasher cleaning for the appropriate dismantled parts.

Once clean, reassemble the components carefully and make sure the milk carafe is properly connected to the machine before testing another milk drink.

  • What's the difference between descaling and the cleaning-tablet programme?

They clean different areas of the Rivelia Start.

The descaling programme circulates descaling solution through the water system to remove mineral deposits. The guide shows a procedure lasting approximately 30 minutes, requiring a collection container larger than 1.5 litres.

The machine-cleaning programme uses a cleaning tablet and takes approximately 10 minutes. A container larger than 0.5 litres is required. The guided procedure is followed by removal of the brewing unit, which is rinsed under running water before being refitted.

Complete whichever procedure the machine is requesting rather than substituting one for the other.

fault codes

  • Water Tank Indicator

Check the water tank when its indicator illuminates. Fill it with fresh water up to the MAX level and reinstall it securely.

The Rivelia Start's tank is removed by tilting it slightly as it is withdrawn, rather than pulling it directly sideways.

  • Grounds Container / Drip Tray Indicator

Remove the drip tray assembly and empty the coffee grounds container.

Clean and refit the components correctly before continuing.

  • Bean Container / Bean Switch Indicator

Check that the bean container contains coffee beans and is correctly installed and locked.

If you are changing beans, use the Bean Switch procedure rather than forcing the hopper from the machine.

  • General Warning Indicator

A general warning can indicate that the machine requires attention beyond simply filling the water tank or emptying the grounds container.

Check the other illuminated indicators and the machine's support information before continuing.

  • Milk Cleaning Indicator

Run the LatteCrema CLEAN operation after milk preparation when indicated.

If the warning persists or milk performance remains poor, dismantle and thoroughly clean the milk carafe.

  • Descaling Indicator

The machine has detected that its guided descaling programme is required. Allow approximately 30 minutes and use a collection container larger than 1.5 litres.

  • Machine Cleaning Indicator

This indicates the separate cleaning-tablet programme rather than descaling. Allow approximately 10 minutes, use the appropriate cleaning tablet and have a container larger than 0.5 litres available.
