Why isn't my coffee as hot as I expected?
Coffee temperature is affected by more than the temperature of the water inside the machine. A cold cup, cold milk, a large drink volume and heat loss during dispensing can all reduce the temperature by the time you take your first sip. Preheating the cup and allowing the machine to complete its normal warm-up can make a noticeable difference.
Should I preheat my coffee cup?
Yes. A cold ceramic cup can absorb a surprising amount of heat from freshly brewed coffee. Preheat the cup using the machine's cup-warming function where available, or rinse it with hot water before brewing. This is particularly useful for smaller drinks such as espresso, where there is less hot liquid available to warm the cup.
Should I increase my coffee machine's temperature setting?
If your machine has an adjustable coffee-temperature setting, increasing it can help when drinks are consistently cooler than you prefer. Make adjustments gradually rather than automatically selecting the highest setting. Different beans, drink sizes and recipes can perform better at different temperatures, so aim for a result that is both hot enough and tastes good.
Why is my milk coffee cooler than my black coffee?
Milk significantly affects the final drink temperature. Cold milk added to freshly brewed coffee absorbs heat, and larger milk-based drinks can feel noticeably cooler than espresso or black coffee. Correct milk heating and a preheated cup can help. Avoid simply overheating the milk, as excessive temperature can negatively affect its flavour and texture.
Why does a larger coffee sometimes seem cooler?
Larger drinks take longer to prepare and have more opportunity to lose heat during dispensing. The cup itself also absorbs heat throughout the process. If you're preparing a long coffee or Americano, preheating the cup and using the machine's intended drink programme can help maintain a better drinking temperature.
When does low coffee temperature indicate a machine problem?
If your coffee has suddenly become substantially cooler despite using the same settings, cups and recipes, the machine may not be heating correctly. Check that it has completed its warm-up and that any temperature settings haven't changed. If hot water, coffee and steam performance are all noticeably cooler than previously, the heating system, temperature sensing or another internal component may require further diagnosis.
