COffee machine brewer cleaning guide

Coffee Machine Brewer Cleaning Guide

Keeping the brewer (brew unit) clean is essential for consistent coffee quality and reliable machine performance. The brewer is where coffee is compressed, extracted, and dispensed, so it is exposed to oils, moisture, and residue on every use. Without regular cleaning, these deposits can build up and cause blockages, poor extraction, mechanical resistance, or even machine errors.

My Coffee Machine® Support
  • keep your coffee tasting great

The brew unit (also called the infuser or brewing group) is the heart of a bean-to-cup coffee machine.

It compresses the ground coffee, pushes hot water through it, and ejects the used puck.

If it isn’t cleaned properly, you’ll get:

    • Bitter or sour tasting coffee
    • Slow dispensing
    • Leaks inside the machine
    • “Brew unit blocked” errors
    • Grinder strain / loud operation
    • Machine stopping mid-cycle

Regular brew unit cleaning protects the motor, seals, and heating system.

  • What Is the Brew Unit?

Inside most bean-to-cup machines (De’Longhi, Jura, Siemens, Philips, Melitta, etc.) the brew unit:

    • Moves forward and backward via a motor
    • Compresses coffee grounds
    • Opens and closes internal valves
    • Contains seals that must stay clean and flexible

It handles heat + pressure + moisture + coffee oils — so it gets dirty quickly.

  • How Often Should You Clean It?

Light Home Use (1–4 drinks daily)

    • Rinse weekly
    • Deep clean monthly

    Moderate Use (5–10 drinks daily)

    • Rinse weekly
    • Deep clean every 2–3 weeks

    Heavy Use

    • Clean weekly
    • Inspect seals monthly
  • If Your Brew Unit Is Removable

    Weekly Rinse

    1. Switch machine OFF properly
    2. Open service door
    3. Remove brew unit
    4. Rinse under warm running water
      *No detergent unless manual allows
    5. Shake off excess water
    6. Leave to air dry (do not towel dry inside)
    7. Wipe inside brew chamber
    8. Reinstall and power machine on

⚠️ Never force the brew unit back in. It must align naturally.

  • Deep Cleaning (Monthly)

    1. Remove brew unit
    2. Rinse thoroughly
    3. Clean:
      Piston area
      Coffee outlet channel
      Seal grooves
    4. Wipe inside machine cavity
    5. Check for:
      Cracked seals
      Flattened O-rings
      Dried coffee buildup

      If manufacturer recommends:
    • Apply small amount of food-safe silicone grease to moving rails or seals
      Do not over-grease.
  • If Your Brew Unit Is NOT Removable

You must use the machine’s cleaning tablet program.

    Cleaning Tablet Cycle

    1. Start “Clean” or “Maintenance” program
    2. Insert cleaning tablet when prompted
    3. Allow full cycle to complete
    4. Do not interrupt
    5. Empty drip tray and dreg box afterwards

This dissolves internal coffee oils and residue.

    Skipping this cycle leads to:

    • Internal blockages
    • Pressure faults
    • Temperature issues
    • Grinder over-compensation
  • Signs Your Brew Unit Needs Cleaning Now

    Coffee tastes unusually bitter

Coffee pucks are wet or sloppy

Machine makes grinding / straining noises

    “Brew group blocked” warning

    Slow coffee flow

    Leaking inside machine

    Coffee grounds scattered internally

  • Common Brew Unit Mistakes

    Putting brew unit in dishwasher

    Using washing-up liquid inside mechanism
    Greasing every visible part
Forcing brew unit back into machine
    Cleaning only when error appears
    Ignoring manufacturer cleaning prompts

  • Why Brew Unit Cleaning Is So Important

    The brew unit:

    • Controls pressure
    • Controls extraction time
    • Protects the heating system
    • Prevents internal strain on drive motor

    Coffee oils harden over time.

When hardened oils mix with heat and moisture, they become sticky residue that restricts movement.

    That’s when faults start appearing.

  • Cleaning Tablets vs Rinsing — What’s the Difference?

    Cleaning Tablets

Dissolves oils, usese automated process, provides deep clean of brewer.

    Rinses

Removes loose coffee and is quick

Both are required for long-term reliability.

  • Final Advice

If you only do one thing consistently:

    Keep the brew unit clean.

    It prevents:

    • Flow errors
    • Brew motor faults
    • Seal damage
    • Internal leaks
    • Expensive repairs
