How to Clean a De'Longhi Magnifica Duo Coffee Brewer

1. Switch the Magnifica Duo off correctly
Switch the machine off using its normal power button.
Don't simply unplug the machine while it is running. Allow the Magnifica Duo to complete its full automatic shutdown sequence first. The brewing unit moves into its correct resting position during this process, which allows it to be removed.
Once the shutdown sequence has completely finished, unplug the machine from the mains before cleaning inside it.
2. Remove the water tank
Pull the water tank out of the Magnifica Duo.
The brewing unit is accessed from the right-hand side of the machine behind the water tank, so removing the tank exposes the brewing-unit access area.
3. Open the brewing-unit flap
Locate the brewing-unit access flap on the right-hand side of the machine.
Release the catch at the top and open the flap. You should now be able to see the removable brewing unit inside the machine.
4. Release the brewing unit
Locate the two coloured release buttons on the sides of the brewing unit.
Press both release buttons inwards at the same time while gently pulling the complete brewing unit straight out towards you.
Don't force it.
If the brewing unit won't release, stop rather than pulling harder. It is usually because the brewer isn't in its correct shutdown position.
5. Soak the brewer for around five minutes
Place the complete removable brewing unit in fresh lukewarm drinking water for approximately five minutes.
This helps loosen compacted coffee residue around the brewer mechanism before rinsing.
Don't add detergent, cleaning tablets or washing-up liquid to the soaking water.
6. Rinse the brewer thoroughly
After soaking, rinse the brewing unit thoroughly under running water.
Pay particular attention to areas where damp ground coffee collects. Continue rinsing until loose coffee residue has been removed.
The rule for this component is simple:
Water only — no detergent and no dishwasher.
Allow excess water to drain from the brewer after rinsing.
7. Clean inside the brewer housing
With the brewing unit still removed, look through the open brewing-unit flap and inspect the area where the brewer normally sits.
Loose dry coffee grounds can accumulate here even when the removable brewer itself is clean.
Use a soft cleaning brush to remove visible coffee deposits from the brewing-unit housing. Don't pour water directly into the inside of the machine.
This is an important part of the clean: repeatedly rinsing the removable brewer while leaving a thick layer of coffee behind it doesn't properly clean the brewing area.
8. Check the brewer before refitting it
Once clean, check that the brewing unit isn't obviously obstructed by compacted coffee and that the mechanism is in a suitable position for refitting.
Don't dismantle the brewing unit beyond the normal removable assembly.
If it appears too large or incorrectly positioned to slide back into its housing, don't force it into the machine. The brewing unit can be returned to its correct fitting size by applying pressure to the two levers as shown in the machine's instructions.
9. Refit the brewing unit
Slide the brewer back onto its internal support in the Magnifica Duo.
Push the unit firmly into position until it clicks into place.
Once fitted, check the two coloured release buttons have sprung back out. This confirms the brewer has locked into position correctly.
10. Close the brewing-unit flap
Close the access flap and make sure it is firmly secured.
Don't attempt to refit the water tank with the flap incorrectly positioned.
11. Refit the water tank
Return the water tank to the Magnifica Duo and push it completely into position.
Reconnect the machine to the mains and switch it on normally.
During startup, the machine will initialise and reposition its internal brewing mechanism automatically.

Why can't I remove the brewing unit from my Magnifica Duo?
The first thing to check is how the machine was switched off. The brewing unit can only be removed when the machine has completed its normal shutdown procedure and the mechanism is in the correct position.
If you've unplugged the Magnifica Duo prematurely and the brewer won't move, don't force it. Close everything, reconnect the machine, switch it on and allow the complete startup sequence to finish. Then switch it off using the normal power button and wait for the entire shutdown sequence to complete before trying again. This is the recommended procedure when a removable brewing unit appears stuck.
Can I wash the Magnifica Duo brewing unit with washing-up liquid?
No. Clean the removable brewing unit with water only. It can be soaked in lukewarm water for around five minutes and then rinsed thoroughly under the tap, but detergent shouldn't be used and the brewer shouldn't be put in the dishwasher. Detergent can interfere with the lubrication required by its moving components.
Why won't the brewing unit go back into my Magnifica Duo?
First check that you're installing it in the correct position and that nothing is obstructing the brewer housing. If the brewing unit itself appears to be extended and won't fit, don't force it into the machine. The Duo instructions show that the brewer can be returned to the correct fitting size by applying pressure to its two levers before insertion. Slide it back onto its support and push it into place until it clicks, then check that both coloured release buttons have sprung back out before closing the flap and reinstalling the water tank.
