How to Descale a Melitta Avanza

Prepare the Machine

Ensure your Melitta Avanza is switched on and ready for operation. If a water filter is fitted, remove it from the water tank and place it in a container of fresh tap water. Use only Melitta ANTI CALC liquid descaler for fully automatic coffee machines, following the instructions on its packaging.

Open the Descaling Programme

Press and hold the Service button for more than 2 seconds to enter Service Mode 1. Press the Service button repeatedly until the descaling programme symbol appears. Hold the Service button again for more than 2 seconds to start. The descaling symbol flashes and one coffee bean indicator illuminates.

Empty the Drip Tray

When the drip tray indicator illuminates, remove and empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container. Reinsert the drip tray without the coffee grounds container. Position the coffee grounds container beneath the Cappuccinatore to collect liquid.

Add the Descaling Solution

When the water indicator illuminates, remove the water tank. Prepare 500 ml of descaling solution using Melitta ANTI CALC liquid descaler, following the product's mixing instructions. Add the prepared solution to the tank and reinstall it. The second descaling stage begins, indicated by two illuminated coffee bean symbols.

Open the Steam Valve

The machine performs several descaling rinses. When the Steam indicator illuminates, turn the valve switch clockwise to open it. Allow the solution to flow through the Cappuccinatore. When the Steam indicator illuminates again, turn the valve switch anticlockwise to close it. The machine performs another rinse.

Empty the Containers Again

When the drip tray indicator illuminates, empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container. Reinsert the drip tray without the grounds container, and place the grounds container beneath the Cappuccinatore again.

Fill with Fresh Water

When the water indicator illuminates, remove the water tank and rinse it thoroughly to remove any remaining descaling solution. Fill the tank with fresh water and reinstall it. The third programme stage begins, indicated by three illuminated coffee bean symbols.

Complete the Fresh-Water Rinse

When the Steam indicator illuminates, open the valve by turning the valve switch clockwise. The machine performs several rinsing operations. When the Steam indicator illuminates again, close the valve by turning the switch anticlockwise. The machine then performs a further rinse.

Finish the Descaling Programme

When the drip tray indicator illuminates, empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container. Reinsert both containers. The descaling indicator goes out and the machine returns to its ready state. Refit the water filter if previously removed.

How often should I descale my Melitta Avanza?
Melitta recommends descaling the Avanza approximately every three months or whenever the descaling indicator illuminates, unless regular use of a water filter changes the required frequency. The correct water hardness setting helps the machine manage maintenance reminders.
How long does the Melitta Avanza descaling programme take?
The current Melitta Avanza operating instructions specify approximately 15 minutes for the integrated descaling programme. Allow additional time for preparing the descaling solution, emptying containers and refilling the water tank. Some earlier manual editions specify approximately 25 minutes, so always follow the instructions supplied with your particular machine.
Why is the descaling symbol still flashing on my Melitta Avanza?
The descaling symbol continues flashing while the programme is running. Follow each prompt to empty the drip tray, refill the water tank or open and close the Cappuccinatore valve. If the programme was interrupted, it may need to be restarted and completed before the descaling reminder clears.

Always follow the illuminated indicators and allow the complete programme to finish. Use Melitta ANTI CALC liquid descaler, prepared according to the product instructions, and remove any fitted water filter before starting. Never interrupt the programme or use vinegar as a substitute for the recommended descaler.
