quick tips

  • Use Speciality Selection for more than the standard drinks

Swipe from the top of the display downwards to open Speciality Selection. From here the S8 provides several additional preparation options.

Extra Shot is available for cappuccino, latte macchiato, flat white and Sweet Latte. The machine performs two brewing operations using half the water each time for a more intense coffee flavour.

You can also select a double product for espresso or coffee, choose ground coffee, or activate Sweet Milk Foam for compatible milk drinks.

  • Check the professional fine foam frother when milk performance drops

If the S8 produces insufficient foam or starts spraying milk from the frother, the manual specifically identifies a dirty professional fine foam frother as the likely cause.

Run the milk-system cleaning programme first. If necessary, remove and completely dismantle the professional fine foam frother and rinse its individual components.

The manual recommends dismantling and rinsing it approximately once a week.

  • Keep milk between 4°C and 8°C

Milk temperature matters on the S8. For good foam consistency, milk should be approximately 4–8°C.

If the milk system is clean and correctly assembled but foam quality deteriorates as the milk becomes warmer, check the milk temperature before looking for a machine fault.

  • If coffee only drips out, check the grind

The S8 manual specifically identifies an excessively fine grind as a cause of coffee coming through the spout only in drips.

Move the grinder towards a coarser setting. If using pre-ground coffee, use a coarser grind.

Incorrectly configured water hardness can also contribute to restricted flow through limescale accumulation, so descaling may be required when filtration isn't being used.

  • Don't mistake filter-rinse water for a leak

When a new CLARIS Smart+ filter is fitted, the S8 automatically recognises it and performs a filter rinse.

The rinse water flows directly into the drip tray. The machine then asks you to empty the drip tray and grounds container.

Finding additional water in the tray immediately after changing the filter is therefore normal operation.

  • Empty the grounds container while the S8 is switched on

When emptying the drip tray and coffee grounds container, leave the S8 switched on.

The machine resets its internal grounds counter when the grounds container is emptied while powered on. If it is routinely emptied with the machine switched off, the counter may not be correctly reset.

FAQ's

  • Why is my Jura S8 producing poor milk foam?

Start with milk temperature: the S8 is designed to work with milk at approximately 4–8°C. Next, clean the milk system and inspect the professional fine foam frother.

If foam remains poor or milk sprays from the outlet, dismantle the frother completely and rinse each component. Dried-on deposits can be soaked in 250ml water with one dosing unit of milk-system cleaner before being thoroughly rinsed.

Also check the HP3 milk pipe and CX3 interchangeable milk spout. The maintenance schedule specifies replacement of both approximately every three months.

  • Why does coffee only come out of my Jura S8 in drips?

The manual gives two specific areas to check.

The coffee may be ground too finely, restricting the coffee system. Select a coarser grinder setting or use coarser pre-ground coffee.

Alternatively, the water hardness may have been incorrectly configured, allowing limescale to accumulate. If appropriate, complete the machine's descaling programme.

  • Why isn't my Jura S8 saying “Fill water tank” when the tank is empty?

This has a particularly useful model-specific answer in the S8 troubleshooting section. If the water tank is empty but “Fill water tank” isn't displayed, the manual identifies heavy limescale deposits inside the water tank as the cause.

Descale the water tank itself, rather than simply running the normal machine descaling programme.

fault codes

  • Error 2 – Grinder Malfunction

Meaning: The grinder cannot rotate correctly.

    Common causes:

    • Oily or flavoured coffee beans
    • Foreign object inside the grinder
    • Grinder jam

    Recommended action:

    • Empty the bean hopper.
    • Remove any visible obstruction.
    • Use fresh, dry coffee beans.
    • If the fault remains, professional service is required.
  • Error 5

Error 5 has the same documented cause as Error 2. Prolonged exposure to cold can cause the S8 to disable heating for safety.

Allow the machine to warm to room temperature.

  • Fill water tank

The water tank is empty and drink preparation is unavailable. Fill the tank with fresh cold water.

Empty coffee grounds container / Empty drip tray

The grounds container or drip tray is full. Empty both and reinstall them. Empty the grounds container while the machine is switched on so its counter resets correctly.

    Drip tray not fitted

The tray is missing or hasn't been inserted correctly. The S8 prevents drink preparation until it is correctly fitted.

  • Fill bean container

The bean container is empty. Coffee specialities cannot be prepared, although milk and hot water can still be dispensed.

    Not enough ground coffee

There isn't enough pre-ground coffee for the selected drink and preparation has stopped. Add more ground coffee on the next attempt, without exceeding the maximum of two level measuring spoons.

    Change the filter

The CLARIS Smart+ cartridge has reached its capacity and should be replaced.

  • Clean

The S8 has reached its automatic coffee-system cleaning requirement.

    Descale

The machine has calculated that descaling is required.

    Clean the milk system

The S8 is requesting the dedicated milk-system cleaning programme.

  • Error 11 – Low Temperature Fault

Meaning: The brewing system cannot reach operating temperature.

    Common causes:

    • Heavy limescale
    • Faulty temperature sensor
    • Cold operating environment

    Recommended action:

    • Warm the machine.
    • Complete a descaling cycle.

    • Service the machine if the fault persists.

  • Cleaning the Coffee System

The S8 automatically requests cleaning after 180 preparations or 80 switch-on rinses.

Open the JURA Cockpit by swiping upwards from the bottom of the start screen and select Clean → Start.

Empty the grounds container and drip tray when instructed and place receptacles beneath the coffee spout and professional fine foam frother.

The programme pauses at “Add cleaning tablet.” Open the ground-coffee filler funnel, insert the cleaning tablet, close the funnel and continue the programme.

Allow the complete cleaning programme to finish without interruption. It takes approximately 20 minutes.

  • Cleaning the Milk System

The S8 should have its milk system cleaned daily whenever milk has been prepared.

Open the Cockpit and select Clean the milk system. Add one dosing unit of milk-system cleaner to the supplied cleaning container and position it beneath the coffee spout and fine foam frother.

Push the height-adjustable fine foam frother fully down to connect with the container, connect the HP3 milk pipe and turn the frother's setting wheel to Milk Foam.

Start the programme and allow it to finish automatically.

The manual additionally recommends dismantling and rinsing the professional fine foam frother approximately once per week.

  • Changing the Water Filter

The S8 uses the CLARIS Smart+ RFID filter.

Remove the water tank, turn the existing cartridge anticlockwise and remove it with the filter extension. Transfer the extension to the replacement CLARIS Smart+ cartridge.

Insert the new cartridge and rotate it clockwise until it audibly clicks into place.

Refill and reinstall the tank. The S8 automatically detects the replacement and begins its filter rinse. Water from this rinse goes directly into the drip tray.

When CLARIS Smart+ filtration is being used correctly, the S8 does not require the normal machine descaling programme.

  • Descaling the Jura S8

If filtration isn't being used, the S8 monitors limescale accumulation according to the configured water hardness and prompts for descaling when required.

When Descale appears, start the programme through the Cockpit and empty the drip tray and grounds container.

Completely dissolve three descaling tablets in 500ml of water, pour the solution into the empty water tank and reinstall it.

The programme passes descaling solution repeatedly through the hot-water spout and professional fine foam frother, with some water travelling directly into the drip tray.

When instructed, remove and thoroughly rinse the tank, fill it with fresh cold water and allow the final rinse stage to complete.

The complete programme takes approximately 20 minutes and shouldn't be interrupted.
