Jura Z5 not heating

Jura Z5 not heating

My Coffee Machine Assist

quick tips

  • Check the coffee temperature setting

The Z5 allows the brewing temperature to be programmed individually for each coffee button.

If drinks have gradually become cooler, confirm the temperature is set to HIGH rather than LOW or NORMAL.

This is one of the first checks recommended by Jura when coffee is not hot enough.

  • Make sure the machine isn't overdue for descaling

Limescale acts as insulation inside the thermoblock, reducing its ability to transfer heat efficiently.

Jura specifically advises descaling the machine if a CLARIS filter is not being used and the coffee is no longer hot enough. Ensure the water hardness has also been programmed correctly so the Z5 knows when descaling is required.

  • Never descale with a CLARIS filter installed

One issue unique to Jura machines is running the descaling programme while a CLARIS filter remains fitted.

Jura warns this can affect operation and recommends removing the filter, completing the descaling programme, then fitting a new filter and programming the machine correctly afterwards.

  • Pre-heat your cup

Even when the machine is working correctly, a cold ceramic cup can reduce the serving temperature significantly.

Jura recommends warming your cup before brewing to achieve the best coffee temperature.

  • Look for heating-related error messages

If the display shows ERROR 2, the Z5 has detected that the machine is too cold to heat safely after prolonged exposure to low temperatures.

Allow the machine to return to normal room temperature before switching it on again.

  • If steam is also weak, suspect the heating circuit

If your coffee is cool and the milk system produces little or no steam, the fault is unlikely to be a simple temperature setting.

    Common causes include:

    • Heavy limescale restricting the thermoblock.
    • A faulty temperature sensor.
    • A failed heating element.
    • An internal heating control fault.

These components require specialist testing and are not user-serviceable.

FAQ's

  • Why is my Jura Z5 coffee no longer as hot as it used to be?

Jura recommends first checking that the coffee temperature is programmed to HIGH. If the setting is correct and you are not using a CLARIS filter, the machine may require descaling because limescale reduces heating efficiency.

  • What does ERROR 2 mean on a Jura Z5?

ERROR 2 indicates the machine has become too cold to heat safely. This can happen if it has been stored or transported in low temperatures. Allow the machine to reach room temperature before switching it on again.

  • Can limescale stop my Jura Z5 heating properly?

Yes. Jura specifically identifies limescale as a cause of reduced coffee temperature when the machine is operated without a CLARIS filter. Regular descaling keeps the thermoblock working efficiently and helps maintain brewing temperature.
