Why does my Melitta Barista TS Smart ask me to clean the milk system after making a milk drink?
This is normal operation. After preparing milk-based drinks, the machine automatically recommends the Easy Cleaning programme to flush milk residue from the milk circuit. Running this programme after each milk drink helps maintain milk quality, prevents blockages, and keeps the system hygienic.
Can I use two different types of coffee beans in the Barista TS Smart?
Yes. The Barista TS Smart features Melitta's Bean Select dual bean hopper system. The machine can automatically choose between the two bean chambers depending on the selected drink, allowing you to use, for example, a dark espresso roast in one hopper and a lighter roast for longer coffees.
How often should I descale my Melitta Barista TS Smart?
The machine monitors water hardness and filter usage to determine when descaling is required. If you use a Melitta Pro Aqua water filter correctly and set the water hardness accurately, descaling may only be needed around once a year under ideal conditions. Always descale when prompted and use a descaling product approved for Melitta machines rather than vinegar.

Water Supply Messages
- Fill Water Tank – The water tank is empty or not correctly fitted. Refill the tank and ensure it is fully seated.
Coffee Bean Messages
- Fill Beans – One of the bean chambers is empty. Refill the selected bean hopper.
- Bean Select Blocked – The Bean Select mechanism cannot move correctly. Empty the bean hopper if necessary and clean around the selector mechanism.
Coffee Grounds & Drip Tray Messages
- Empty Coffee Grounds – The coffee grounds container is full. Empty it and reinsert it correctly.
- Empty Drip Tray – The drip tray is full or not fitted correctly. Empty, clean and refit the tray.
Brew Unit Messages
- Insert Brew Unit – The brew unit has been removed or is not locked into position. Refit the brew unit correctly.
Heating & System Messages
- System Heating – The machine is warming up before it is ready to brew. Wait until the process is complete.
- System Cooling – The machine is cooling after steam production or maintenance. Wait for the cycle to finish.
Cleaning & Maintenance Messages
- Run Cleaning Program – The brewing system requires a cleaning cycle. Start the automatic cleaning programme using the recommended cleaning tablets.
- Run Descale Program – Limescale has reached the service threshold. Run the automatic descaling programme using a suitable Melitta descaler.
- Milk System Blocked – The milk circuit requires cleaning or is partially blocked. Run the milk system cleaning programme and clean all milk components thoroughly.
