Quick Tips

Quick Tips

  • Wait for the G ready icon before brewing

When switched on, the Distinctions goes through a preheat sequence. The six display segments count down alongside the P preheat icon. When the segments have gone out and the G icon appears, the machine has reached brewing temperature and is ready.

  • Get the coffee dose and tamp right

Use the smaller sieve and one level measure for a single espresso, or the larger sieve and two level measures for a double. Tamp lightly and evenly. The manual warns that coffee packed too tightly makes it difficult for water to pass through, while coffee that's too loose allows water through too easily.

  • Clean the portafilter if espresso stops flowing

If no espresso is being produced, check the portafilter and sieve for a blockage. The Distinctions troubleshooting guidance also identifies an empty water tank, scale build-up and incorrect grind size as causes of no espresso.

  • Let the machine recover after steaming

The Distinctions cannot immediately return to brewing after steaming or frothing milk. It requires a short cooling period. This is normal operating behaviour and shouldn't automatically be mistaken for a heating or brewing fault.

  • Watch the P and ! indicators

If you attempt to brew, steam or dispense hot water before the correct temperature has been reached, the P preheat icon, countdown segments and flashing ! caution icon can appear. Allow the machine to complete its heating cycle before trying again.

  • Keep the portafilter fitting clean

Before fitting the portafilter, make sure its rim is free from coffee debris. Push it upwards into the machine and rotate it fully to the right. Coffee around the fitting can prevent the portafilter locking correctly, while incorrect fitting can cause espresso to leak around it.

FAQ's

FAQ's

  • Why is my Russell Hobbs Distinctions not dispensing espresso?

Check the water tank first, followed by the portafilter and sieve for blockages. The 26451 troubleshooting guide lists an empty tank, blocked portafilter or sieve, scale build-up and incorrect grind size as causes of no espresso. If water can pass through normally without coffee fitted, also review the grind, dose and tamp.

  • What do the P and G symbols mean on the Russell Hobbs Distinctions?

P indicates preheating, while G indicates that the machine is ready. During preheating, six display segments progressively count down. Once they have gone out and G appears, the machine has reached the required temperature.

  • Why won't my Russell Hobbs Distinctions make coffee after steaming milk?

The machine requires a short cooling period after steaming or frothing and cannot brew immediately. This is documented normal behaviour rather than necessarily indicating a fault. Allow the machine to recover before attempting another espresso.

fault codes

  • P – Preheat

The P symbol indicates that the machine is preheating. During the heating cycle, the six display segments progressively go out. Once the machine reaches the correct operating temperature, the P symbol is replaced by the G ready symbol. If P appears after making coffee, the machine is simply reheating before it is ready for another function.

  • G – Machine Ready

The G symbol means the Distinctions has reached the required operating temperature and is ready. It appears once the preheat sequence has finished. This is a normal status indicator rather than a fault or warning code.

  • ! – Caution Warning

The flashing ! caution symbol can indicate several operating conditions. During brewing it can appear if the steam/hot-water control has been left open. It can also appear if manual brewing has continued beyond 60 seconds, steaming has continued beyond 180 seconds, or hot-water dispensing has continued beyond 90 seconds. Check which function was being used when the warning appeared.

  • ! When the Machine Is Switched On

If the steam/hot-water control is already in the open position when the machine is switched on, the caution warning can appear and the machine will not brew. Return the steam/hot-water control to its off position before attempting to make coffee.

  • P + Countdown + Flashing ! – Brewing Too Early

If the P preheat symbol, countdown display and flashing ! symbol appear together when attempting to brew, the machine has not yet reached the correct temperature. Allow the Distinctions to complete its preheat cycle before trying to make espresso again.

  • P + Countdown + Flashing ! – Steam Not Ready

The same combination can appear if you attempt to use the steam function before the correct temperature has been reached. Wait for the heating sequence to finish and the machine to indicate that it is ready before opening the steam control.

  • P + Countdown + Flashing ! – Hot Water Not Ready

Attempting to dispense hot water before the machine has reached the required temperature can also trigger the P symbol, countdown segments and flashing caution warning. Allow the machine to finish heating before trying the hot-water function again.

  • Automatic & Manual Espresso

The Distinctions can automatically produce a single espresso of approximately 30 ml or a double of approximately 60 ml. There's also a manual mode that lets you control how much coffee is dispensed by holding the manual button, with a maximum manual run time of 60 seconds.

  • Steam, Froth & Hot Water

The swivel arm and removable steam nozzle can be used for heating and frothing milk, while the steam/hot-water control adjusts the output. The manual gives separate techniques for producing larger-bubble froth or finer microfoam, making the steam system useful for different milk-based drinks.

  • Cup Warming & Everyday Features

The machine includes a cup-warming plate, removable drip tray with a full indicator, removable water tank, one- and two-shot filter sieves and a cleaning tool. It also automatically shuts off after 25 minutes of inactivity.
