  • Wait until all mode buttons stay illuminated

    When the 28700 is heating, the On/Off button remains illuminated while the other function buttons flash. Once the machine reaches the correct brewing temperature, all mode buttons remain steadily illuminated. Wait for this before starting your espresso.

  • Use the correct basket for your espresso

    The 28700 has separate 1-shot and 2-shot sieves. The manual illustrates one measure of ground coffee for the 1-shot basket and two measures for the 2-shot basket. Level the coffee and tamp it before fitting the portafilter.

  • Let the machine cool after steaming

    After using steam, the machine reaches its maximum operating temperature and won't brew again until it has cooled sufficiently. You can speed this up by using the hot-water dispensing function before returning to espresso brewing.

  • Preheat the portafilter for hotter espresso

    For a hotter drink, fit the empty sieve and portafilter and run a brew cycle for around 5–10 seconds. Carefully remove the hot portafilter, add your ground coffee and brew normally. Cups can also be warmed on the cup-warming plate.

  • Clean the steam nozzle after every use

    The removable steam nozzle should be cleaned after each use. The manual advises immersing it in a cup of clean water and wiping it with a damp cloth. The nozzle tip can also be pulled downwards, removed and washed separately.

  • Don't ignore the 500-use clean warning

    The 28700 counts brewing, steaming and hot-water operations. After 500 uses, all indicators flash three times when the machine is switched on to indicate that cleaning/descaling is due. Descaling should be carried out at least when this warning appears.

  • Why are all the lights flashing on my Russell Hobbs 28700?

    All indicators can flash for several reasons, so look at what you were doing immediately before the warning appeared. Documented triggers include trying to brew or steam at the wrong temperature, dispensing hot water before the correct temperature is reached, exceeding a function's time limit, or having the steam control dial open when it shouldn't be. All indicators also flash three times at switch-on after 500 uses as the clean warning.

  • Why won't my Russell Hobbs 28700 make coffee after I've steamed milk?

    This can be normal. After steaming, the machine is at its maximum operating temperature and will not brew until it cools down. The 28700 manual specifically recommends using the hot-water dispensing function if you want to cool the machine more quickly.

  • Can the Russell Hobbs 28700 use coffee pods?

    Yes. The 28700 has a separate portafilter specifically for pods and its own Pod function button. This sits alongside the conventional portafilter and 1-shot and 2-shot sieves used for ground coffee. The parts diagram on pages 2–3 shows the two different portafilter arrangements.

  • Function Buttons Flash During Preheat

    When the 28700 is switched on but hasn't yet reached brewing temperature, the On/Off button remains illuminated while the other operating-mode buttons flash. This isn't a fault. Once optimum brewing temperature has been reached, all mode buttons remain steadily illuminated.

  • All Indicators Flash – Incorrect Temperature

    If you attempt to brew or steam while the machine is too hot or too cold, all indicators flash. Allow the machine to reach the appropriate operating temperature before trying the function again.

  • All Indicators Flash – Hot Water Temperature

    The warning also occurs if you try to dispense hot water before the machine is sufficiently preheated. The manual specifies that hot-water dispensing is available when the machine is overheated, such as when cooling it after steam operation.

  • All Indicators Flash – Steam Dial Open

    If the Steam Control Dial is open when the machine is switched on, all indicators flash and the machine will not operate normally until the dial is closed. Opening the Steam Control Dial during an automatic or manual brewing cycle also triggers the error condition.

  • All Indicators Flash – Function Running Too Long

    The 28700 has maximum operating times. Manual brewing is limited to 60 seconds, hot-water dispensing to 90 seconds and steaming to 180 seconds. Exceeding these limits triggers the error condition and stops the relevant operation. For steam and hot water, the machine will not function again until the Steam Control Dial has been closed.

  • All Indicators Flash Three Times – Clean Warning

    After 500 uses, including brewing, steaming and hot-water dispensing, all indicators flash three times when the machine is switched on. The machine then returns to Default Mode. This is the 28700's clean warning rather than an internal machine fault.

  • 1-Shot, 2-Shot & Pod Indicators Flash – Preset Setting Mode

    If these three indicators are flashing while the other mode buttons are off, the machine may simply be in Preset Time Setting Mode. This mode allows the brew duration for each of the three brewing functions to be changed.

  • Preset Time Not Saved

    The 28700 rejects a programmed brew time if it exceeds 30 seconds for 1-Shot, 50 seconds for 2-Shot or 45 seconds for Pod. Instead of saving the setting, the machine returns to Default Mode. A successful change is confirmed by all indicators flashing three times.

    One of the more distinctive features of the Everyday Espresso Machine is its two brewing systems. It includes a conventional portafilter with separate 1-shot and 2-shot sieves, plus a dedicated pod portafilter. Separate 1-Shot, 2-Shot and Pod buttons on the front panel control the three brewing options.

  • Automatic, Manual & Programmable Brewing

    The 28700 isn't limited to fixed automatic drinks. Pressing a brew button starts its normal automatic programme, while pressing and holding the 1-Shot, 2-Shot or Pod button provides manual control and stops brewing when the button is released. The preset brewing times can also be reprogrammed and later reset to their factory settings.

  • Steam, Hot Water & Cup Warming

    The machine has a swivel steam arm with removable steam nozzle for heating and frothing milk, plus a hot-water function operated through the Steam Control Dial. Hot water also has a second purpose: it can help cool the machine after steaming so you can return to brewing more quickly. A warming plate on top of the machine can be used to preheat espresso cups.
