Quick Tips

Quick Tips

  • Prime the machine if it has run dry

If the Café Genie has been operated without water, it may need priming before it will dispense normally again. Fill the water tank, install the milk tank, fit an empty portafilter and run the Latte function at least three times, or until water flows from the portafilter.

  • Wait for the function lights to stop flashing

During preheating, the function indicators flash. When the machine reaches the correct brewing temperature, the indicators remain steadily illuminated. If the milk tank isn't installed, only the espresso functions flash during preheat.

  • Make sure the milk tank clicks into position

The Café Genie monitors whether its milk tank is correctly installed. Push the tank fully into the machine and listen for the audible click confirming correct installation. The milk-drink functions illuminate once the tank is correctly fitted.

  • Use the short clean cycle after milk drinks

After making a milk-based drink, turn the Milk Control Dial to its cleaning position, place a cup under the milk nozzle and press Clean. The machine dispenses steam/hot water through the nozzle for approximately 20 seconds.

  • Don't over-tamp if no espresso is coming through

The Café Genie troubleshooting information lists excessive tamping pressure, incorrect grind size and a blocked portafilter or sieve among the causes of no espresso. If flow is poor, clean the basket and try again with less tamping pressure.

  • Act on the 200-use clean warning

After 200 uses, the clean icon flashes three times and then stays illuminated. This means the Café Genie requires its Full Clean Cycle. Once the complete cleaning and plain-water rinse cycle has finished, the warning is removed.

FAQ's

FAQ's

  • Why are all the lights flashing three times on my Russell Hobbs Café Genie?

It depends on when it happens. If you try to start a brew before the machine has reached the correct temperature, all lights flash three times and the machine returns to preheat mode. The same three-flash behaviour occurs if the machine detects no water flow during brewing, after which it returns to standby. Check whether the machine is still heating or whether the water tank/flow needs attention

  • Why won't my Russell Hobbs Café Genie make a milk drink?

Check that the milk tank is fitted correctly. The Café Genie expects an audible click when the tank is installed, and its milk-drink functions become available once the tank is fully in position. If a milk-based function is selected without the tank correctly installed, the Latte, Cappuccino, Cortado, Macchiato and Flat White indicators flash three times.

  • Why is my Russell Hobbs Café Genie not dispensing espresso?

The manual identifies several possible causes: an empty or low water tank, blocked portafilter or sieve, incorrect grind, excessive tamping pressure, or the machine requiring priming. If the machine has previously been operated without water, carry out the documented priming procedure before investigating further.

fault codes

  • All Lights Flash Three Times – Brew Temperature Error

If you attempt to start a brew before the Café Genie has reached the correct brewing temperature, all lights flash three times. The machine then returns to preheat mode. Allow the indicators to stop flashing and remain illuminated before trying the drink again.

  • All Lights Flash Three Times – No Water Flow

If the Café Genie detects no water flow during brewing, it cancels the brew function, flashes all lights three times and returns to standby. Check the water tank and, if the machine has attempted to operate without water, prime it again before use.

  • Milk Drink Indicators Flash Three Times

If the Latte, Cappuccino, Cortado, Macchiato and Flat White indicators flash three times, the milk tank isn't correctly installed. Remove and refit the tank until you hear the audible click confirming that it is correctly seated.

  • Clean Icon Flashes Three Times and Stays On

After 200 uses, the clean icon flashes three times and then remains illuminated. This indicates that the Full Clean Cycle is required. The cycle uses descaler in the water tank and runs through both the portafilter and milk-nozzle system, followed by a plain-water rinse cycle.

  • Function Indicators Flash – Preheating

Flashing function indicators aren't necessarily a fault. When the machine is below brewing temperature, the indicators flash during preheating and remain illuminated once the correct temperature has been reached. With the milk tank removed, only the espresso functions flash during this stage.

  • P + Countdown + Flashing ! – Hot Water Not Ready

Attempting to dispense hot water before the machine has reached the required temperature can also trigger the P symbol, countdown segments and flashing caution warning. Allow the machine to finish heating before trying the hot-water function again.

  • Five Automatic Milk Drinks

The Café Genie automatically froths the milk and then adds espresso when making its milk-based drinks. There are dedicated functions for Latte, Cappuccino, Cortado, Macchiato and Flat White, alongside separate Single and Double Espresso functions.

  • Adjustable Espresso Volumes

The Café Genie lets you change the preset volume for its single and double espresso functions. Enter the preset-volume mode, hold the required espresso button until the desired quantity has been dispensed, then release it to save the new volume. The indicators flash three times to confirm the change. The machine also provides a procedure for returning the presets to their factory defaults.

  • Dedicated Milk System & Cleaning Cycle

Rather than using a conventional manual steam wand, the Café Genie has a removable milk tank, milk-control dial and dedicated milk nozzle. The milk system has its own short cleaning programme for everyday use, while the machine also tracks usage and requests a Full Clean Cycle after 200 uses.
