quick tips

  • Start with grind setting 8

Sage recommends starting with the grind size set to 8, then adjusting finer or coarser depending on your extraction time and flavour.

  • Purge the group head before brewing

Run a short burst of water through the group head before inserting the portafilter. This removes old coffee residue and helps stabilise the brewing temperature.

  • Tamp consistently

Aim for approximately 15–20kg of tamping pressure. A consistent tamp produces a more even extraction and better espresso.

  • Use the Razor™ trimming tool

After tamping, use the supplied Razor™ tool to remove excess coffee and achieve the correct dose every time.

  • Replace the water filter every 3 months

The integrated water filter should be replaced every 90 days (or after approximately 40 litres) to reduce limescale and maintain coffee quality.

  • Clean the machine when the CLEAN ME light appears

When the CLEAN ME indicator illuminates, run the cleaning cycle using the supplied cleaning disc and tablet to remove coffee oils from the brew head.

FAQ's

  • Why is my espresso pouring too quickly?

A fast pour is usually caused by a grind that is too coarse, too little coffee in the basket or light tamping pressure. Adjust one setting at a time until extraction takes around 25–30 seconds.

  • Why won't my Barista Express produce steam?

Check that the machine has fully heated, the water tank is full and locked into place, and the steam wand isn't blocked with dried milk. Descaling may also be required.

  • Why is the CLEAN ME light on?

The CLEAN ME light indicates that the brew head requires a cleaning cycle to remove coffee oils. It is separate from descaling and should be completed using a cleaning tablet and cleaning disc.

  • How to Clean the Steam Wand

Always clean the steam wand immediately after frothing milk.

    1. Wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth straight after use.
    2. Point the wand over the drip tray.
    3. Briefly turn the Steam dial to purge any milk from inside the wand.
    4. If the steam tip becomes blocked, use the cleaning tool supplied with the machine to clear the holes.
    5. For stubborn blockages, remove the steam tip using the integrated spanner, soak it in hot water, clear the holes with the cleaning pin and refit it securely.
  • How to Set the Grind Size

    1. Start at grind setting 16.
    2. Turn the grind dial towards the back of the machine for a finer grind.
    3. Turn the dial towards the front for a coarser grind.
    4. Make only one-step adjustments between coffees.
    5. If espresso runs too fast, grind finer.
    6. If espresso drips very slowly or tastes bitter, grind coarser.
  • How to Change the Water Filter

    1. Remove the old filter from the water tank.
    2. Soak the new filter in cold water for 5 minutes.
    3. Rinse the filter holder with cold water.
    4. Fit the filter into the holder.
    5. Push the holder firmly into the water tank until it locks into place.
    6. Fill the tank with fresh cold water and reinstall it.
    7. Replace the filter every 3 months for best performance and reduced limescale.
