quick tips

  • Adjust the grinder while it's running

Only adjust the grind setting while the grinder is operating or when the bean hopper is empty. Turning the adjustment knob while stationary with beans inside can damage the grinder mechanism.

  • Clean the brewing unit every week

Remove and rinse the brewing unit under running water at least once a week. Clean the brewing chamber using the supplied brush before refitting. Regular cleaning helps maintain reliable brewing and coffee quality.

  • Empty the grounds container correctly

Always empty the coffee grounds container while the machine is switched on and leave it removed for at least 15 seconds. This allows the machine to reset the grounds counter correctly.

  • Descale when the warning first appears

A steady descaling light means the machine recommends descaling. Waiting until the light flashes will eventually prevent drinks from being prepared until the descaling programme has been completed.

  • Use the correct water hardness setting

Setting the correct water hardness allows the machine to calculate descaling intervals more accurately and helps reduce unnecessary descaling reminders.

  • Clean the steam wand after every use

After frothing milk, clean the steam wand immediately and purge a small amount of steam. This helps prevent milk residue blocking the steam outlet and maintains good milk frothing performance.

FAQ's

  • Why is my Smeg BCC02 not making coffee?

Check the warning lights first. The most common causes are an empty water tank, empty bean hopper, full grounds container, incorrectly fitted brewing unit or a descaling cycle that is now mandatory.

  • How often should I clean the brewing unit?

Smeg recommends cleaning the brewing unit at least once a week. The brewing group indicator will also illuminate when cleaning is recommended.

  • Can I use pre-ground coffee?

No. The BCC02 is designed to use whole coffee beans only. The manual specifically advises against adding pre-ground coffee to the bean hopper.

  • Cleaning the Steam Wand

To maintain good milk frothing performance:

    • Allow the steam wand to cool.
    • Remove the lower section.
    • Clean the steam outlet using the supplied cleaning needle.
    • Rinse under running water.
    • Reassemble before use.

Cleaning after every use helps prevent milk residue blocking the steam outlet.

  • Adjusting the Grinder

The BCC02 allows the grind size to be adjusted to suit your coffee beans.

    • Turn the adjustment knob clockwise for a coarser grind.
    • Turn it anticlockwise for a finer grind.
    • Only adjust while the grinder is operating to avoid damaging the grinding mechanism
  • Setting the Water Hardness

Use the supplied water hardness test strip to select the correct setting:

    • Light
    • Medium
    • Hard

Choosing the correct setting helps the machine determine the correct descaling interval. Smeg also recommends fitting the optional water softener filter where appropriate.
