quick tips

  • Check the Rivelia's red condensate tray as well as the main drip tray

The Rivelia has a main drip tray (A14) and a separate red condensate tray (A10). When removing the drip tray, check the red condensate tray and empty it if necessary. This is easy to overlook when investigating water around the front or underneath the machine. The manual also states that the main drip tray has a red float level indicator and must be emptied before that indicator projects through the cup tray; otherwise water can overflow onto the machine or worktop.

  • Don't mistake normal internal discharge water for a leak

Water accumulating in the drip tray does not necessarily mean the Rivelia has developed a leak. Automatic rinsing and operation of the internal water circuits deliberately discharge water into the tray. Empty and dry the tray, refit it completely and monitor how quickly it fills. A gradual accumulation associated with rinsing is normal; water rapidly overflowing or appearing underneath the machine needs further investigation.

  • Check that the complete drip-tray assembly is pushed fully home

The Rivelia monitors the grounds container and drip-tray assembly. Its manual specifically identifies a missing or incorrectly positioned drip tray/grounds container and instructs that the complete assembly should be refitted and pressed fully home, with the side flap correctly closed. If you've recently removed the tray for cleaning, reassemble the cup tray, grille, drip tray and grounds container correctly before investigating an internal leak.

  • Inspect the removable water tank if clean water appears underneath

If clear water appears beneath the Rivelia even when it hasn't been making coffee, concentrate on the water supply side. Remove the tank, empty it and inspect it carefully for damage, particularly around the base and outlet area. The Rivelia manual calls for the tank to be removed and cleaned periodically and for it to be correctly repositioned afterwards; the machine also displays a message when it detects that the tank isn't correctly fitted. Refit it firmly and monitor the dry machine to see whether the leak returns.

  • Clean underneath the drip tray and around the internal compartment

The Rivelia manual specifically calls for the area accessible after removing the drip tray to be checked approximately once a month. Coffee deposits and residue should be removed using the supplied brush and a sponge, with remaining loose residue removed carefully. This is particularly worthwhile when water appears to be collecting around the tray compartment rather than simply inside the tray. Switch the machine off normally and unplug it before cleaning inside this area.

  • Use the timing and location of the leak to narrow down the cause

Dry the Rivelia, tray and worktop completely before testing. If water appears while the machine is standing unused with a full tank, investigate the tank and inlet side first. If it appears during startup or shutdown rinsing, inspect the drip tray, condensate tray and drainage area. If substantial water appears only while a drink is being prepared, an internal hydraulic or brewing-circuit leak becomes more likely. If water is clearly escaping inside the machine rather than being directed into the trays, stop using it and have the internal circuit inspected.

FAQ's

  • Why does my Rivelia always have water in the drip tray?

Some water in the tray is expected. The machine uses water during its internal operations and automatic rinse cycles, including rinsing associated with switching on and off. The Rivelia also has a separate red condensate tray, which should be checked when the main drip tray is removed. What isn't normal is the tray suddenly filling far more quickly than previously or water regularly overflowing onto the worktop.

  • Why is clean water leaking from underneath my Rivelia?

First establish whether the leak occurs when the machine is operating or simply while the full water tank is installed. Remove the tank, inspect it for damage, dry the tank compartment and worktop, then reinstall the tank correctly. The Rivelia can detect when its tank isn't correctly positioned and instructs the user to refit it. If clean water continues appearing underneath while the machine is idle, the tank or water inlet side deserves investigation before the brewing circuit.

  • My Rivelia drip tray fills very quickly – is that normal?

A certain amount of water is normal because internal rinsing water is deliberately collected in the drip tray. However, the Rivelia's red float is there to indicate when the tray is approaching its limit, and the manual specifically warns that allowing it to fill beyond this point can cause water to overflow and potentially damage the machine or surrounding surface. If the tray suddenly starts filling substantially faster than it used to despite regular emptying, investigate further rather than assuming all of the additional water is normal.

fault codes

  • De'Longhi Rivelia Display Messages

    • Fill water tank – Refill the water tank and ensure it is fully seated in the machine.
    • Empty coffee grounds container – Empty the grounds container and drip tray, then refit them correctly.
    • Insert brew unit – The brew group has been removed or is not locked into position correctly.
    • Fill beans – Add coffee beans to the hopper. If the hopper is full, clean the bean sensor and avoid very oily beans.
    • Descale required – Run the complete descaling programme using De'Longhi EcoDecalk or a compatible lactic-acid descaler.
    • Carafe not recognised – Remove and refit the milk carafe, ensuring it is fully inserted and the electrical contacts are clean and dry.
  • Additional Troubleshooting Messages

    • No coffee / Coffee not dispensing – Usually caused by a blocked brew unit, blocked coffee spouts or limescale restricting water flow.
    • Sensor error – Most commonly caused by limescale build-up or dirty electrical contacts. Descale the machine and clean the relevant sensors and connections.
