Quick Tips

  • Prime the Water Circuit if the Machine Has Run Dry

If the Brera has been allowed to run out of water, has been unused for a long period or displays the circuit-priming indication, refill the water tank and place a container beneath the Pannarello. Turn the selector to the hot-water position when instructed. The machine will automatically draw water through the circuit before asking you to return the selector to its central position.

  • Clean the Brew Group Regularly

The Brera's brew group is removable through the service door. The manual recommends cleaning it whenever the bean hopper is filled, or at least once a week. Switch the machine off, remove the grounds drawer, open the service door and remove the brew group using its handle while pressing PUSH. Wash it using lukewarm water only — do not use detergent or soap. The brew group should also be lubricated approximately every 500 brewing cycles.

  • Only Adjust the Grinder While It Is Running

The Brera has five grinder settings. The adjustment knob is located inside the bean hopper and should only be turned while the grinder is operating. Adjust it just one position at a time, then make two or three coffees before deciding whether another adjustment is needed. A finer setting slows extraction and generally produces a stron

  • Clean the Pannarello After Frothing Milk

Milk residue can quickly restrict the Pannarello and reduce steam performance. Remove and clean its external components after milk preparation and make sure the steam outlet remains clear. If steam becomes weak or milk no longer froths correctly, the Pannarello should be one of the first areas checked.

  • Don't Mistake the Automatic Rinse for a Leak

The Brera automatically rinses its internal coffee circuit during certain start-up and shutdown conditions. A small quantity of water can therefore enter the drip tray even when no coffee has been prepared. This is normal operation. Empty and clean the drip tray regularly rather than assuming that every appearance of water indicates an internal leak.

  • Act When the Descaling Warning Appears

The Brera monitors when descaling is required and displays a warning when the procedure is due. Don't simply clear or ignore the indication. Limescale can progressively restrict water flow and affect heating and dispensing performance. Follow the Brera's dedicated descaling procedure rather than using a generic flushing method. Gaggia also specifically advises against vinegar and mineral-acid-based descalers.

  • Why is my Gaggia Brera grinding beans but not dispensing coffee?

First listen to what happens after grinding. If the pump operates but little or no coffee appears, the grind may be too fine, the hydraulic circuit may need priming or the brew group may be dirty. The Brera manual specifically lists all three as possible causes of slow coffee delivery. If water flows normally from the Pannarello but not through the coffee outlet, concentrate troubleshooting around the brew group and coffee dispensing path rather than the water tank or pump.

  • Why is coffee from my Gaggia Brera coming out very slowly?

An excessively fine grind is one of the Brera's documented causes of slow dispensing. Adjust the ceramic grinder one position coarser while the grinder is running, then prepare two or three coffees before judging the change. Also clean the brew group and make sure the water circuit is correctly primed. If coffee is escaping around the dispensing head rather than through its outlets, the manual identifies a blocked dispensing head as a possible cause.

  • Why won't the brew group go back into my Gaggia Brera?

Don't force it. Check that the brew group's reference marks are aligned and that its lever is correctly positioned. Press the PUSH mechanism where required to return the group to its correct resting position before insertion. It should then slide into its seat and lock without pressing the PUSH button during installation. If the internal drive is not in its normal home position, allow the machine to reset its mechanism before trying to install the group again.

  • Water Tank Empty

Fill the removable water tank with fresh, non-carbonated drinking water and make sure it is correctly installed.

  • Bean Hopper Empty

Refill the hopper with coffee beans. Only whole coffee beans should be placed in the hopper.

  • Grounds Drawer Full

Empty the coffee grounds drawer. Do this with the machine switched on so that the machine can correctly recognise and reset the condition.

  • Grounds Drawer Missing

Check that the grounds drawer has been completely reinserted.

  • Brew Group Missing / Incorrectly Installed

Open the service door and check that the removable brew group is correctly positioned and locked into the machine.

  • Prime / Fill Water Circuit

    — The hydraulic circuit contains insufficient water or air has entered it. Fill the tank and use the hot-water/Pannarello outlet to prime the circuit when instructed by the display.

  • Selector in Wrong Position

The Brera may request that the steam/hot-water selector is moved or returned to its central position. Follow the displayed indication before attempting another drink.

  • Clean the Brew Group

Switch the Brera off and disconnect it from the power supply. Remove the grounds drawer and open the service door. Press PUSH while pulling the brew group out using its handle. Rinse the complete group with lukewarm water, paying particular attention to the upper filter. Do not use washing-up liquid or detergent. Allow it to dry before refitting it. Gaggia specifies cleaning the group whenever the bean hopper is filled or at least weekly.

  • Clean the Pannarello

Clean the Pannarello after preparing milk so residue does not dry inside the steam assembly. Once it is cool enough to handle safely, remove the washable external parts, rinse them thoroughly and clean the steam tube. Reassemble the Pannarello correctly before its next use. A clean air and steam path is particularly important for maintaining good milk frothing performance.

  • Descale the Gaggia Brera

Descale when the machine indicates that the procedure is required. Descaling removes mineral deposits from the Brera's hydraulic and heating circuit and is different from cleaning coffee oils from the brew group. Follow the complete Brera descaling sequence and complete all required rinsing stages before returning the machine to normal use.

  • Change / Install the Water Filter

The Brera is compatible with the INTENZA+ water filter. Before installation, immerse the filter vertically in cold water with its opening facing upwards and gently squeeze the sides to release trapped air. Set the filter according to local water hardness, remove the small white filter from the water tank and install the INTENZA filter firmly into its position. The manual specifies settings A for soft water, B for medium water and C for hard water.
