  • Use Bean Select to match your coffee

    The Melitta CI® features two separate bean chambers with Bean Select, allowing you to switch between different coffee beans. Store espresso beans in one chamber and milder beans in the other to get the best flavour for different drinks without constantly emptying the hopper.

  • Clean the brewing unit every week

    Remove the brewing unit once a week and rinse it thoroughly under warm running water. Allow it to dry before refitting. This removes coffee oils and grounds that can affect extraction and helps prevent brewing faults.

  • Never skip the milk cleaning programme

    After preparing milk drinks, the machine requests an Easy Cleaning rinse. Running this programme immediately helps prevent milk residue drying inside the system and reduces hygiene problems. Carry out the full milk system cleaning programme weekly.

  • Don't ignore cleaning reminders

    The CI® automatically monitors usage and prompts when cleaning or descaling is required. Running these programmes when requested helps prevent blockages, poor coffee quality and premature component wear.

  • Set the correct water hardness

    Configure the machine to match your local water hardness using the supplied test strip. Accurate settings ensure the descaling reminders appear at the correct intervals and help protect the internal hydraulic system.

  • Adjust the grinder gradually

    If your coffee pours too quickly or tastes weak, make small adjustments to the grinder while it is operating. Only move the grind setting one step at a time and allow several drinks before judging the result.

  • How often should I clean the brewing unit on my Melitta CI®?

    Melitta recommends removing and rinsing the brewing unit once every week. Regular cleaning removes coffee residues and oils that can reduce brewing performance and increase the likelihood of faults.

  • How often should I descale my Melitta CI®?

    If you are not using a water filter, Melitta recommends running the descaling programme approximately every three months. When using a compatible water filter, descale only when the machine requests it.

  • Can I use any cleaning tablets?

    For best performance, Melitta recommends using Melitta PERFECT CLEAN cleaning tablets for the automatic cleaning programme and Melitta ANTI CALC descaling solution during descaling.

  • Clean Coffee System

    The machine has detected that the coffee brewing system requires cleaning. Run the automatic Cleaning Coffee System programme using a suitable coffee machine cleaning tablet. The programme takes around 15 minutes and should not be interrupted.

    Descale Machine

    Limescale has built up inside the hydraulic system. Start the automatic descaling programme using a suitable coffee machine descaler. If a water filter is fitted, remove it when instructed and reinstall it after descaling has finished.

    Easy Cleaning Required

    After preparing a milk-based drink, the CI® requests an Easy Cleaning cycle. This rinses the milk circuit and should be completed immediately to prevent milk residue drying inside the system.

    Clean Milk System

    The machine recommends running the full milk system cleaning programme. Melitta advises carrying this out around once a week to maintain hygiene and reliable milk frothing performance.

  • Empty Drip Tray and Coffee Grounds Container

    The drip tray or grounds container is full. Empty both containers, clean them if necessary, and reinstall them correctly before preparing more drinks.

    Refill Water Tank

    The water tank is empty or not seated correctly. Fill the tank with fresh drinking water and ensure it is fully inserted before continuing.

    Fill Bean Container

    One or both bean chambers are empty. Refill the appropriate Bean Select hopper with fresh coffee beans before preparing another drink.

    Insert Brewing Unit

    The brewing unit has been removed or is not correctly locked into position. Refit the brewing unit securely and close the service door before restarting the machine.

    System Error – Switch the appliance off and back on. If the message remains, contact Melitta customer support. The manual does not assign a numeric code to this message.
