Melitta coffee machine not dispensing

If your Melitta coffee machine is not dispensing coffee, the problem is usually caused by a blocked brew unit, restricted coffee circuit, lack of water flow or beans failing to feed correctly into the grinder. Melitta machines are designed to protect the brewing system, so they may stop dispensing completely or only produce a few drops when they detect excessive resistance. Regular cleaning of the brew unit and coffee system, together with fresh beans and routine maintenance, prevents most dispensing issues.

  • Blocked brew unit

The removable brew unit is the most common cause of dispensing problems. Coffee oils and fine grounds can block the filter screen and restrict water passing through the coffee puck.

Remove the brew unit, rinse it thoroughly under warm water, allow it to dry naturally, then refit it correctly before brewing again.

  • Coffee system requires cleaning

Melitta manuals recommend running the coffee system cleaning programme whenever prompted. A dirty brewing circuit can reduce coffee flow until little or no coffee is dispensed.

Run the complete cleaning programme using the recommended coffee cleaning tablets and allow the cycle to finish without interruption.

  • Water is not reaching the brew unit

If the pump runs but no coffee is produced, air in the system, a blocked water circuit or poor water supply may be preventing water from reaching the brewing chamber.

Ensure the water tank is full and seated correctly, then run a hot water cycle to confirm the machine has normal water flow.

  • Beans are not feeding into the grinder

Some Melitta models may display a bean warning even when the hopper contains coffee. Beans can bridge together, particularly if they are oily or heavily roasted.

Gently stir or tap the bean hopper, avoid flavoured or oily beans, and make sure the Bean Select mechanism (where fitted) is fully positioned to one hopper rather than between both chambers.

  • Test the hot water function

Dispensing hot water can help identify whether the problem affects the entire heating system or only coffee preparation.

    Check whether:

    • Hot water is also cold.
    • Steam temperature is lower than normal.
    • Only coffee drinks are affected.
  • Grind is too fine

An excessively fine grind can create too much resistance inside the brew unit. The machine may drip slowly before stopping completely.

Adjust the grinder one step coarser while the grinder is running, then brew several coffees to allow the new setting to take effect.

  • Coffee spouts are blocked

Coffee residue can gradually block the dispensing nozzles, causing weak flow or preventing coffee from leaving the machine.

Clean the coffee outlets carefully with a damp cloth and ensure the dispensing channels are clear.

  • Brew unit not installed correctly

If the brew unit is not fully locked into position, the brewing cycle may stop before coffee is dispensed.

Remove the brew unit, inspect it for damage or obstructions, then reinstall it until it locks securely into place.

  • Common symptoms

    • Machine grinds beans but no coffee comes out.
    • Only a few drops of coffee are dispensed.
    • Coffee starts flowing then stops.
    • Pump can be heard running with little or no coffee produced.
    • Beans remain dry after brewing.
    • Machine asks for cleaning before dispensing normally again.

If your Melitta coffee machine still is not dispensing coffee after cleaning the brew unit, running the coffee cleaning programme and checking the water and bean supply, the fault may involve the pump, brew unit drive, drainage valve or another internal component.
