nespresso coffee machine flashing lights

nespresso coffee machine flashing lights

  • Machine warming up

A slowly flashing light immediately after switching the machine on usually means the machine is heating the thermoblock and preparing to brew.

This is completely normal and should stop after around 20 to 30 seconds. If the light continues flashing for several minutes, switch the machine off, allow it to cool, then restart it.

  • Rapid flashing lights

Fast flashing lights often indicate that the machine has detected a fault or cannot complete its startup routine.

    Common causes include:

    • Temporary electronic fault
    • Internal system error
    • Capsule mechanism not fully closed
    • Brewing cycle interrupted

Turn the machine off, unplug it for five minutes and restart it. If the lights continue flashing, check that the capsule lever is fully locked and the water tank is correctly fitted.

  • Flashing light and no coffee

If the machine flashes but no coffee is dispensed, first check the water supply.

    Possible causes include:

    • Empty water tank
    • Water tank not seated correctly
    • Air trapped in the hydraulic system
    • Blocked coffee outlet
    • Scale restricting water flow

Refilling the tank and running a rinse cycle often restores normal operation.

  • Flashing after descaling

Many Nespresso machines continue flashing if the descaling programme has not been completed correctly.

The machine will only return to normal once the full descaling process has finished, including the final fresh water rinse.

If the light continues flashing after descaling:

    • Repeat the rinse cycle.
    • Ensure the water tank has been refilled with clean water.
    • Follow the complete descaling procedure without interruption.

  • Orange flashing lights (Vertuo models)

Many Vertuo machines use an orange or amber light rather than a white indicator.

An orange flashing light can indicate:

    • Descaling required
    • Machine overheating
    • Brewing interruption
    • Capsule recognition issue
    • General maintenance required

The exact meaning depends on the flashing sequence and the specific Vertuo model.

  • Alternating or pulsing lights

Alternating flashing patterns often indicate the machine is waiting for user input during cleaning or descaling.

    Check whether:

    • The capsule has been removed.
    • The lever is fully closed.
    • The water tank is fitted.
    • The cleaning programme is waiting for confirmation.
  • Flashing lights after inserting a capsule

If the lights begin flashing as soon as a capsule is inserted, the machine may be struggling to recognise or pierce it.

    Try:

    • Removing and reinserting the capsule.
    • Using a genuine Nespresso capsule.
    • Checking for damaged capsules.
    • Cleaning around the capsule holder.
    • Closing the lever firmly.
