  • Prime the water circuit if the machine cannot draw water

    If the Anima has been run with an empty water tank, the tank has been removed for a period of time, or air has entered the hydraulic circuit, the display may request water-circuit priming. Fill and correctly refit the water tank and follow the display instructions. An Anima Error 5 is specifically associated with a water-circuit problem or air in the circuit.

  • Clean the removable brew group regularly

    The Anima's brew group can be removed through the service area for cleaning. Rinse the brew group with lukewarm water and allow it to air dry before refitting it. Do not use soap or washing-up liquid on the brew group. Keeping the group and the area around it clean helps prevent restricted coffee flow and brew-group movement problems.

  • Adjust the ceramic grinder gradually

    The Anima has a five-position ceramic grinder adjustment. If coffee is dispensing too slowly, the grind may be too fine; if it is dispensing too quickly and weakly, a finer setting may help. Make grinder changes gradually rather than moving several settings at once, then allow the machine to prepare several coffees before judging the result.

  • Use Optiaroma before changing the grinder unnecessarily

    The Anima has five Optiaroma strength settings, which alter the quantity of coffee ground for each drink. If the coffee simply tastes too weak or too strong, try changing Optiaroma first. Grinder adjustment is more appropriate when the actual extraction speed or coffee flow is incorrect.

  • Keep the Pannarello clean

    The standard Anima uses a removable stainless-steel classic Pannarello for steaming milk and dispensing hot water. Milk residue can quickly restrict its air and steam passages, resulting in poor frothing even when the machine is producing steam normally. Clean the Pannarello after milk preparation and regularly remove its washable components for a more thorough clean.

  • Follow the display when descaling is requested

    The Anima provides a descaling warning and a guided descaling procedure through its display. Don't ignore the warning for extended periods, as scale can restrict water flow and affect heating and brewing performance. Gaggia specifically advises against using vinegar and mineral-acid-based descalers.

  • Why is my Gaggia Anima grinding coffee but not dispensing coffee?

    First check whether the machine is attempting to brew normally or displaying a warning. Remove and clean the brew group and check the coffee path for compacted grounds. The Anima's fault information specifically identifies a clogged coffee outlet duct as a possible cause of Error 1 / grinder blocked. Also check that the water tank is full and correctly seated and that the machine isn't requesting the water circuit to be primed.

  • Why won't the brew group go back into my Gaggia Anima?

    The brew group and the machine's internal drive need to be in their correct home positions. Don't force the group into place.

    If the mechanism has moved while the brew group was removed, refit the drip tray and grounds container, close the service door and switch the machine off and back on. Wait until the machine returns to its ready state before attempting to remove or refit the brew group again. This is also Gaggia's specified response for Anima Errors 3 and 4, which indicate an incorrectly positioned or locked brew group.

  • Why is my Gaggia Anima not frothing milk properly?

    The standard Anima uses a classic Pannarello rather than an automatic milk carafe. If steam is available but the milk isn't frothing correctly, clean the Pannarello thoroughly and make sure its removable components and air passages are free from dried milk.

    If little or no steam is produced, the problem may be elsewhere in the machine rather than the Pannarello itself. Check for a descaling warning and confirm that hot water can be dispensed normally. Poor hot-water flow as well as poor steam performance can point towards a water-flow or scale problem.

  • Error 1 – Coffee grinder blocked

    Gaggia identifies a clogged coffee outlet duct as the likely cause. Thoroughly clean the coffee outlet/ground-coffee path before repeatedly trying to operate the grinder.

  • Error 3 or 4 – Brew group locked or incorrectly positioned

    Close the service door and switch the machine off and back on. Allow it to return to its ready state so the brew-group drive can reposition itself before attempting to remove the group again.

  • Error 5 – Water circuit error

    This indicates air in the water circuit. Remove and refit the water tank a couple of times, ensuring that it is seated correctly. Check that the water-tank seating area is clean. The hydraulic circuit may then need to be primed.

  • Water tank empty – refill and correctly refit the water tank.


    Coffee bean hopper empty – refill the bean container.


    Coffee grounds drawer full – empty the grounds drawer when requested.


    Brew group missing – correctly install the brew group.


    Drip tray/grounds drawer/service door – check that these components are correctly fitted and the door is closed.


    Prime water circuit – follow the display prompt to restore water flow.

  • Replace INTENZA+ filter – replace the water filter and follow the appropriate machine procedure.


    Descaling required – start the guided descaling procedure.


    Heating – wait for the machine to reach operating temperature.


    Rinsing – allow the automatic rinse to complete.


    Brew group rebooting – wait while the internal mechanism returns to its operating position.

  • How to Clean the Gaggia Anima Brew Group

    1. Switch the machine off, remove the drip tray and coffee grounds drawer, then open the service door.
    2. Remove the brew group by pulling its handle while pressing the PUSH button.
    3. Rinse the brew group thoroughly with lukewarm water. Do not use soap or detergent.
    4. Carefully clean the upper filter and remove accumulated coffee residue.
    5. Allow the brew group to air dry completely.
    6. Clean loose coffee grounds from inside the machine.
    7. Before refitting, check that the brew group is in its correct resting position and that its reference marks align.
    8. Slide the brew group back into position until it locks into place without pressing PUSH, then refit the grounds drawer and drip tray and close the service door.

  • How to Clean the Gaggia Anima Pannarello

    After each milk preparation:

    1. Place a container underneath the Pannarello.
    2. Dispense a small amount of steam to clear milk residue from the steam circuit.
    3. Wipe the outside of the Pannarello with a clean damp cloth.

    For a more thorough clean:

    1. Make sure the steam wand has cooled before handling it.
    2. Remove the external Pannarello from the steam wand.
    3. Remove its upper section from the steam/hot-water wand.
    4. Wash the components thoroughly with fresh water, making sure milk deposits are removed.
    5. Clean the steam/hot-water wand with a damp cloth.
    6. Reassemble the Pannarello correctly before using the steam function again.

    Keeping the small air openings clear is particularly important for good milk frothing.

  • How to Change the Gaggia Anima INTENZA+ Water Filter

    1. Remove the INTENZA+ filter from its packaging.
    2. Set the filter according to your local water hardness using its A, B or C adjustment.
    3. Immerse the filter upside down in cold water and gently press its sides to release trapped air.
    4. Remove the water tank and take out the existing filter, if fitted.
    5. Insert the prepared INTENZA+ filter into the water tank and press it firmly into position.
    6. Fill the tank with fresh water and refit it to the machine.
    7. Enter the Anima's MENU and locate the INTENZA+ Filter setting.

    8. Activate/reset the filter setting as appropriate and confirm the selection.
    9. Follow the machine's prompts to complete the filter procedure.

    The filter setting is important because it allows the Anima to keep track of filter use and indicate when replacement is required.

  • How to Descale the Gaggia Anima

    1. When the Anima displays its descaling warning, enter the machine's MENU and select the descaling function.
    2. Remove the INTENZA+ water filter, if one is installed.
    3. Remove and empty the drip tray and coffee grounds drawer, then refit them.
    4. Prepare the descaling solution in the water tank as directed by the descaler instructions.
    5. Place a sufficiently large container beneath the coffee dispensing spout and steam/hot-water outlet.
    6. Start the descaling cycle and allow the Anima to carry out its programmed dispensing sequence.
    7. When prompted, remove and rinse the water tank thoroughly.

    8. Fill the tank with fresh drinking water and refit it.
    9. Empty the collection container and place it back underneath the outlets.
    10. Continue with the machine's rinse cycle, refilling the tank if instructed.
    11. Allow the complete procedure to finish; don't switch the machine off midway through the cycle.
    12. When descaling has finished, rinse the water tank, empty the drip tray and return the machine to normal use.
    13. Reinstall or replace the INTENZA+ filter as appropriate.
