Descale your De'Longhi Magnifica Evo when the descale indicator illuminates on the control panel. The complete programme takes approximately 30 minutes and includes a descaling stage followed by two fresh-water rinses.

This procedure applies specifically to Magnifica Evo ECAM29X.6Y / ECAM29X.8Y EX:2 machines.

Important: Magnifica Evo models use different control panels and descaling sequences. Check the model number underneath your machine before starting. If your machine is an ECAM29X.5X or the earlier ECAM29X.6Y / ECAM29X.8Y version rather than EX:2, use the procedure for that version.

You will need:

100 ml coffee-machine descaler

Approximately 1 litre of water for the descaling solution

Fresh drinking water for the rinse cycles

A container holding at least 2 litres

The removable hot-water spout

Approximately 30 minutes

If a water-softener filter is fitted inside the water tank, it must be removed before adding the descaling solution. Keep it to one side because it is refitted during the second rinse.

Once the descaling programme has started, allow the machine to complete the full programme and rinse sequence.

Make sure the removable hot-water spout is fitted correctly to the machine.

The Magnifica Evo uses both the coffee spouts and hot-water spout during the descaling programme, so the hot-water spout needs to be installed before starting.

Press and hold the descale button for at least 5 seconds.

The corresponding LED begins flashing rapidly.

The mild intensity LED illuminates to confirm that the machine has entered Step 1 of the descaling programme.

Remove the drip tray and coffee grounds container.

Empty both and refit them correctly.

Remove the water tank and empty it completely.

If a water-softener filter is installed inside the tank, remove it now.

Do not descale the machine with the filter left in the water tank.

The Magnifica Evo water tank has A and B level markings on the side/back of the tank.

Pour 100 ml of descaler into the empty water tank until it reaches level A.

Then add approximately 1 litre of water until the solution reaches level B.

Refit the water tank securely.

Place an empty container with a capacity of at least 2 litres underneath both:

The adjustable coffee spouts

The hot-water spout

Position it carefully because liquid will be released from both outlets during the programme.

Press the descale button again.

The descale indicator flashes to confirm that the first stage is running.

The Magnifica Evo now begins the automatic descaling process.

For approximately 15 minutes, the machine automatically alternates between:

Pausing

Dispensing through the hot-water spout

Dispensing through the coffee spouts

This stop-start operation is normal.

Do not switch the machine off or interrupt the programme.

When this stage has finished, the low-water indicator illuminates.

The Magnifica Evo is now ready for its first rinse.

Empty the container containing the used descaling solution.

Remove the water tank and empty it.

Rinse the tank thoroughly under fresh running water.

Fill the tank with fresh drinking water right up to the MAX mark.

Do not refit the water filter yet.

Return the full water tank to the machine.

Place the empty 2-litre container back underneath the coffee and hot-water spouts.

Press the rapidly flashing descale button.

The medium intensity LED flashes, indicating that Step 2 — the first rinse — is underway.

The Magnifica Evo automatically rinses the internal circuit through the coffee spouts and hot-water spout.

Allow the rinse to finish automatically.

When it has completed, the low-water indicator illuminates again.

Empty the container containing the first rinse water.

Remove and empty the water tank.

Fill the tank again with fresh drinking water up to the MAX mark.

If your Magnifica Evo uses a water-softener filter and you removed it before descaling, refit the filter at this stage.

Return the water tank to the machine.

Place the empty collection container underneath the outlets again.

Press the rapidly flashing descale button again.

The strong intensity LED flashes, confirming that Step 3 — the second rinse — has started.

During this stage, rinse water is delivered through the hot-water spout.

Allow the machine to finish the programme automatically.

When the LED associated with the pre-ground coffee function illuminates, the Magnifica Evo has correctly completed the descaling cycle.

There are still a few final housekeeping steps before making another coffee.

The coffee grounds-container indicator illuminates.

Remove and empty the container used to collect the rinse water.

Take out the drip tray and coffee grounds container.

Empty both.

Don't be concerned if you find some water inside the grounds container after descaling. This can occur during the rinse process and is normal.

Refit the grounds container and drip tray correctly.

The no-water indicator illuminates.

Remove the water tank and fill it with fresh drinking water.

Refit the tank securely.

Your Magnifica Evo is now ready to use.

A third rinse does not necessarily mean that the descaling programme has failed.

The Magnifica Evo can request another rinse if the water tank was not filled completely to the MAX level during the previous rinse cycles.

If this happens:

Empty the drip tray.

Remove the water tank.

Fill it completely to the MAX mark with fresh water.

Refit the tank.

Repeat the second-rinse stage.

Allow the additional rinse to finish.

This ensures that the remaining descaling solution has been completely flushed from the machine's internal water circuit.

Don't estimate the amount of rinse water required. Fill the tank completely to its MAX line when instructed.

An underfilled tank is one of the reasons the Magnifica Evo can request a third rinse.

If a water-softener filter is installed, remove it before adding the descaling solution.

On this version of the Magnifica Evo, the filter is refitted when preparing the second rinse, not during the first rinse.

During the main descaling stage, the Magnifica Evo deliberately alternates between dispensing liquid and pausing.

This is part of the automatic programme. Don't press buttons or switch the machine off because it appears to have temporarily stopped.
