  • RINSE

A RINSE message can appear on Ninja Luxe Café machines when switching from a hot drink to a cold drink. The machine needs to lower the brewing temperature before continuing.

Remove the portafilter, place a container of at least 350 ml under the group head and press START BREW. The machine will run approximately 230 ml of water through the group head before returning to the correct temperature.

Engineer Tip: This is a normal operating prompt rather than a machine failure.

  • CLEAN Light

When the CLEAN light illuminates, the machine is asking for a group-head cleaning cycle. Ninja states that this cycle removes coffee oils and grounds that have accumulated around the brewing system.

On the ES601UK Luxe Café, the cleaning cycle uses the cleaning disc and a cleaning tablet installed in the portafilter. Empty the drip tray first because waste water from the cycle is discharged into it.

Engineer Tip: Don't continue ignoring the CLEAN light. A heavily contaminated brew path can eventually affect flow and extraction.

  • DESCALE Light

The DESCALE light means the machine has reached the point where a descale cycle is required. Mineral deposits build up in the internal water circuit over time and can eventually reduce water flow or affect drink quality.

Ninja advises carrying out the complete descale programme rather than simply flushing water through the machine. On the ES601UK, the descale cycle takes substantially longer than the normal cleaning cycle.

Engineer Tip: If the DESCALE light has been ignored and the machine is already dispensing very slowly, limescale may have progressed beyond a simple reminder.

  • hd0 – hd5

The hd setting relates to water hardness, not a machine fault.

During initial setup, the Luxe Café uses the supplied test strip to determine the hardness of the incoming water. The machine can be set from hd0 to hd5, corresponding to the result from the test strip. This setting helps the machine calculate when descaling is required.

Engineer Tip: Setting the water hardness correctly matters. If the setting is much softer than your actual water, the machine may ask for descaling less frequently than it should.

  • _h01

_h01 is the beeper/sound setting in the ES601UK additional settings menu. It is not an error code.

It allows the machine's audible beeps to be switched on or off.

  • _h02

    _h02 controls Eco Mode.

When enabled, Eco Mode can turn the boiler off after brewing to reduce energy use. If a customer sees this while navigating the settings menu, it does not indicate a heater fault.

  • _h03

_h03 controls whether the machine displays its recommended grind setting.

This is part of the Ninja Barista Assist system and is not a fault message.

  • _h04

_h04 resets the Barista Assist recommended grind setting.

Use this when the grind recommendation needs to be returned to its default setting. It is a settings function rather than an error code

  • _h05

    _h05 is the factory-settings reset.

Selecting the reset option restores machine variables to their default settings. This can be useful after settings have been changed, but it should not be treated as a repair for an underlying mechanical fault.

  • _h06

    _h06 controls brew temperature.

The available settings are LO, M and HI. If coffee seems cooler than expected, check this setting before assuming the machine has developed a heating-system fault.

  • _h07

    _h07 controls froth temperature.

The available choices are also LO, M and HI. This is particularly relevant where brewed coffee is hot but milk drinks seem cooler than expected.

  • _h08

    _h08 opens the water-hardness setting.

This allows the hd0–hd5 value to be reset after checking your water with the supplied hardness strip.

  • Flashing Lights or Unrecognised Message

If your Ninja displays a message or flashing-light pattern that is not listed above, don't immediately assume the control board has failed.

First switch the machine off, check the water tank, drip tray, portafilter and removable components are correctly fitted, and allow the machine to cool if it has been heavily used. Ninja's official troubleshooting system includes dedicated branches for grinding, brewing, frothing, cleaning and error messages/flashing lights, so the meaning can depend on what the machine was doing when the warning appeared.
